My Dive Buddy and I are thinking of going to Freeport over the 4th of July. We live just outside Tampa FL, anyone suggestions on dive/accomodation and air fare packages?

Hi,
Don't know how much you know about FPB but one of the things you need to be careful of when looking for a place to stay is where it is located. There are basically 2 areas, the International Bazzar and Port Lucaya. If you get out of these 2 areas, you either have to rent a car (not me- they drive on the wrong side ) or get a cab every evening.....or eat all your meals at a hotel, again, not me first choice. So I always find a place within easy walking distance of either of theses 2 places. I also like being close to a buss stop. So far, the best deal/location I have found is Bell Channel Inn http://www.bellchannelinn.com/ . They are close to Port Lucaya, a buss stop and have an on site dive operation.

You may want to talk to Celia at UNEXSO in Port Lucaya. Freeport Bahama. http://www.unexso.com/indexb.htm I have dove with them several times. They can make all your diving and hotel arrangements. You may also want to take the crews ship from Lauderdale or book air from Tampa.

We are leaving for Freeport in 2 days!
After trying to decide between Grand Bahama Scuba, and Carribean Divers - we chose Carribean Divers because it is very close to our resort. We haven't paid for everything yet - so if we aren't happy with Carribean Divers - we will make the drive to Grand Bahama Scuba (providing they have availability).

We are also doing the Shark and Dolphing Dive with Unexso.

We got a package from Yahoo Travel - 1 week at Club Viva Fortuna (all-inclusive) - and air fare from Omaha -for 2K - total. We have heard that Viva Fortuna is not fancy - which is ok with us - and has a great beach - we is what we love! The food is supposedly mostly buffets - but we plan to go out a few nights too.

I will post a review when we get back and let you know how it went!

We will be going to GB for the 4th to the 8th of July. On our previous trips, we have stayed at Xanadu and dove with Xanadu dive. It is close to the Freeport/Bazaar/Casino area. This time we are planning to stay at Running Mon (near Xanadu) and dive with Xanadu. They offer several trips daily, have nitrox and do multi-dive discounts. They will also let you store your gear in the dive shop and give you a 10% discount if you book online. They also do the best shark dives.

We checked out staying in Port Lucaya and diving with Unexso. The Port Lucaya area is generally newer and the market place is fun, but I don't think the Casino is open yet. The Our Lucaya complex is impressive, but quite pricey. The cab rides between Freeport and Port Lucaya aren't too bad (about $10 each way) Unexso is a well established operator, however, they only run a very limited dive schedule (I was shocked when I talked to them as they only have one boat a day on many days) They don't offer nitrox and are a bit more expensive than Xanadu, but they do offer the only dolphin dive around, however, they are proud of it as it is about $190.

As for flights, your best bet is probably Continental Connection. If they don't have a direct out of Tampa, I believe they do a direct from Orlando. The most you would have would be a connection in Ft Lauderdale.

AOWDiver and myself booked a dive package with Bell Channel. Seems to be a value priced package. $530 for 6 boat dives each plus hotel accomodations. We'll be going over the 4th of July and will post a dive report on our return. Thanks again for the suggestions.
