I have a quick question. I am looking for a car that can handle around 4 80's and two sets of equipment for my pops and I dive trips. We are using either his Accord, looks like a low rider with all that weight, or my mother Saab (also looks ridiculas). Since I am a teenager I would robably get a used auto adn use it. I know trucks are good but I am on a tight budget, like a Ford Ranger or something. Please help. Thanks.

You can pick up a used Jeep Cherokee for between $2,000 and $2500. About a 1987. If you look around you can find a decent one. It has stiff suspension that will handle the load and seats up to 5. With the 4.0 engine it will have plenty of power. The 2.8 4 cylinder will also work but requires a standard transmission due to lack of power. I just picked one up today to use as my ScubaMobile!:D

I have a '94 Loyale wagon I got for around $2000, and it can easily hold 4 tanks, two sets of gear, a couple of small duffle bags, a cooler, and a passenger. It gets great mileage without all that stuff too!

This is more for others than you, since you're on a budget, but the Chevy Avalanche has the largest locking, hose-downable "trunk" of them all. Plus a great ride, plus comfy seating for seven, etc.

Damn. My 1998 Grand Am takes 6 Al 80's, three sets of gear, three divers, and still handles like a dream and gets 32 mpg on the highway :)

That stiffer sporty suspension keeps it from dragging its butt too ;)

I've had the equipment for 8 people, including dive float, 8 tanks, BCs, etc. All that, plus three divers in the AV.

I would recommend a small wagon (older Subaru Legacy or something similar) over a truck for two reasons.

First, its likely to cost less.

Second, you won't need to buy a cap to protect your gear from thieves and the weather.

On the other hand, the tailgate of a 4wd full size pickup is the perfect height for donning a set of doubles....

With my 2000 accord, we get 2 full sets of gear for cold water (no drysuits yet dmanit!!) 4 AL80s, a cooler, camping gear for 2, and two people no problem....

We have packed it "full" with 3 sets and 6 tanks, but then it looks ridiculous.....

I find it is pretty comfortable for 2 divers and full gear for a weekend.
