December 10 TaveuniIsland
The time onthe Naia ends and we move this dive trip from Vitti Levu island to Taveuni. Wewaited at the airport in Nadi from 9:00 A.M. till 3:00 P.M. before our planewould leave and they changed planes to an 8 seater twin prop plane that scaredthe bejesus out of the wife on takeoff and the last third of the flight was ina driving rain storm and you couldn’t see squat outside the window. Prettyscary according to Sue who closed her eyes for much of the flight. The GardenIsland resort is about a 20 minute ride from the airport up a good coastal roadand my initial impression of the place is very good. We arrived in time for dinner, pork chops andbaked potatoes, darn good if I do say so myself. We’ll see what tomorrow brings when we startdiving.

Dive 1,Jealous Jelly, Saw 3 white tip sharks, a moray eel but Sue is fighting legcramps. The reefs here are just a notch below what we saw on the Naia as far asnumber of fish. Nice diving though.
Dive 2,Storm, another nice shallow dive cut 10 minutes short by Sue’s crampingproblem. She’s searching for a reason for this, hopefully it goes awaytomorrow? We came up to a driving rain storm and had zero visibility on theride back to Garden Island Resort.

Dive 1, FishFactory, we saw a blue ribbon eel and a moray eel and a nudibranch, nice divefor 50 minutes and Sue had minimal cramps. She did some stretching ahead oftime. Nice coral formations on this dive with a lot of fish.
Dive 2,Great White Wall, this is the signature dive of Rainbow Reef and it doesn’tdisappoint. The wall has at least 100 vertical feet of soft white coral allover this wall, quite a sight. There aretwo swim thru’s at the halfway point of this dive and after we came through thelast one there was this white tip shark laying in the sand right out the exit, pretty cool sentry. Sue never had anyproblems here, maybe the cramps are over with?
Dive 3,Nuku, This was a beautiful shallow dive that we never went below 55 feet. Wesaw some eels again, nudibranchs and lots of clown fish and one kept swimmingright up to my mask trying to scare me away, tough guy. Sue was fine here tooand really liked this 60 minute dive. Between dives 2 and 3 we went to this beautiful park to have a picniclunch right on the water on Taveuni, what a nice spot. They bring a lot ofschool kids there for nature study but they’re all off for the summer rightnow. Too cool, you’d never find this spot or have a reason to come here otherwise.

Dive 1, TheGreat White Wall, more white tips as we did this dive in reverse, decentcurrent had the soft coral blooming for a nice 50 minute dive.
Dive 2,Cabbage Patch, this dive has a bommie filled with the green gold coral that lookslike cabbage and has a ton of fish on it. We saw a moray eel and another whitetip shark. Sue liked this dive a lot because it had a gentle current withnudibranchs. No more leg cramps for Susie Q.

Dive 1,Freeway, wholly smokes was the current ripping on this site. I saw severalnudibranchs and sharks and all at high speed. This was one of the swiftestcurrents we have ever been in anywhere. What a riot, Sue was filling up her wetsuit on this dive. J
Dive 2,Rainbow’s End, I’m still amazed at some of the life we’ve seen this week. Justafter we got to a sandy bottom at 65 feet we saw a good sized blue ribbon eelway out of his hole and not 3 feet away was another one of similar size, that’sa one in a million encounter, truly unbelievable. Then we head down the reef and see around 5sharks and a giant moray eel, maybe the biggest one I’ve ever seen. This was our best dive in Taveuni by a longshot. There were thousands of fish of all kinds on this part of rainbow reef.
Our surfaceinterval was at that terrific park again and this time we walked around shoreand used some lounge chairs. This is without a doubt the prettiest and mostisolated spot to have a picnic on Fiji, and we have this whole place toourselves every single day, just another slice of heaven.
Dive 3,Jack’s Place, more ripping current and another big eel. We did this dive as ashallow dive and avoiding all the shallow coral flying by at 5 knots is ablast. While we were on the top of one bommie my spring strap on my left fincame off and I had to refasten it on the fin while floating by the coral, that’s a first for me. This was our last dive with Wanny and Melania, our diveguides all week at Garden Island Resort, they did a fabulous job and we’llleave a nice donation in the dive shops Christmas fund because of how good theywere.

Dive 1,Jealous Jelly, we dived this site early in the week but this time the currentwas humming along. It took some careful dodging of shallow coral heads on theway down, but after a little while we ducked behind a big coral head and thecurrent no longer affected us. We saw a couple of eels and several nudibranchsand as always, beautiful soft coral of all colors.
Dive 2, EndsBommie, another beautiful large coral head at the end of the dive, but beforethat we saw many nudibranchs and a giant moral eel. The top of this bommie wasfilled with sun and it was a great last dive of our trip. One last shark showedup to wave us good bye.
GardenIsland Resort has a first class dive operation and we happened to be there on avery slow week and Sue and I were the only two divers on the boat except for anew dive master, Baptiste, from France, who had just arrived from anotherisland in Fiji the day after we started diving, nice young man. The weather hasbeen fantastic all week with sunny skies, 85 degree temperatures and calm seas, you couldn’t ask for better conditions. I’d love to make it back here someday but there are just so many placesleft to visit that it make be awhile so until then, Bula Vinaka!

Thanks so much for the recount, I'm researching heading to Fiji for 2 weeks next October, and this is one of my current (excuse the pun) top 5 options. Negative entries required? My buddy has trouble descending through the first atmosphere, but after that is fine ... current is fine, fast descent in a problem.

They don't allow negative entries at Taveuni but we did them all week on the Naia, it wasn't a problem though for any of us. Good dive op at Garden Island, they'd take good care of your buddy. We had a package with 12 dives over 5 days, 2,3,2,3,2 is how we did it.

The view from the pool area looking out over the water is one of the prettiest I've ever seen, just beautiful and they have all these harmless fruit bats that live in the trees there that leave while you're eating dinner every night, nice place.

My Girlfriend and I spent a week at Garden Island in June and had a wonderful time. Top notch resort with wonderful staff and dive crew! I would recommend Garden Island to anyone considering Fiji.
