Hi-

I am racing the Ironman triathlon in Kona next month. I am considering doing the manta ray night dive (1 tank) the Tuesday before the race. The race is on Saturday, and I will be tapering (resting) all week. This is not a question of too much exertion causing DCS since I won't be exerting myself on Wednesday. What I really want to know is if this will adversely affect my race.

Thanks,

Matt

Since the dive is so shallow, 30-40 feet, and sedentary, hard to see how you could possibly be affected. If the dive op does an earlier dive before the Mantas, just skip it.

Climbing the ladder to the boat will be about the only time you exert yourself.

I would agree with this. I did the Manta dive back in April and I think our max depth was ~25-30 fsw. You could use your no fly time from your computer as a guide if you are offgassed or not. For a dive like that I would think that would take at most 12 hours so pretty much by late the next morning you should be good to go.

Good luck with the race.

Hi Matt,

As the others have said, given a routine manta night dive off Kona there would be no reason to anticipate adverse physiological effects upon a triathalon 4 days later.

Now, if you slipped on the boat, became excessively chilled after the dive, sustained a significant marine envenomation or the like, there could be implications.

Do enjoy the competition.
