Hi!

New to this board and new to diving. OW certified and only 11 logged dives.

Just came back from Mexico and I took the opportunity to do some diving when there. When I flew back home I felt a strange feeling, that I am wondering about. Did 4 dives in total on 2 separate days (4 days apart) and the last day the dives were 45 minutes at 45 ft and 57 minutes at 47 ft (surface interval 40 minutes and safety stops as required). We flew home 19 hours after I finished the dives (have learned that it shoud be at least 18 hours).

The first flight was short but with jet aircraft and 36000ft. During that flihgt I felt a light pain in my wrist and upper side of the hand. I felt a tingeling feeling (can you say so?...english is not my native language) and it felt like the skin was stretched out and the skin was also rashed (red). Nothing more than that, and no other sympthoms, like fatigue or so.

When we had landed the sympthoms disapered after a while and then we waited 4 hours for our next flight, which was 2,5 hours and finally another 7,5 hours flight home. During these I felt nothing etiher.

Could these sympthoms had anything to do with my diving? Since I am new to this, I have not really get to know my limits, or how my body react. I am always very careful and would not risk anything. I had not been drinking any alcohol except for one beer between the diving and the flight. I'm 47 and in farily good physical condition.

What do you think?

Maggy

PS. BTW the diving was really good!

Hi Maggy,

I must say this does sound typical of the symptoms we have seen in our research. Nothing prior to the flight, minor symptoms during the flight, and resolution on reaching normobaric conditions. I don't know of anything more to tell you than, it is likely that this was decompression related based on the pre-flight depth exposure history but without evaluation at the time of the event... we may never know (It would be interesting to hear/ see your dive profiles).

You do bring up another interesting question that seems to be often overlooked. What are the implications of repetitive flights after diving? I only know of one abstract on this topic (reference below) and it is interesting that the symptoms did not recur on the subsequent flights.

REPETITIVE FLYING AFTER DIVING.
Cramer and Sheffield 2006 UHMS abstract
RRR ID: 3633
NOTE: This is an abstract so no paper available.

You can find this and other abstracts/ papers in our 'suggested reading list'. There is an amazing group of hyperbaric researchers in Sweden if you wish to follow up locally. Send me a PM if you need their contact information.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
Take care,
Gene

Hi Maggy,

So sorry to hear about your symptoms, sounds as though it may have been mild dcs. Have you had any other symptoms since you have been home?

Glad to hear your diving went well!

Hi Maggy,

What is described sounds very much like "skin bends"/cutaneous DCS. The rash described likely was cutis marmorata.

If the wrist/hand discomfort and tingling/itching/stretched sensations of the skin have entirely resolved, and there are no other signs or symptoms, then the event very probably is over.

Should signs or symptoms of posible DCI be experienced on future dives, a dive medicine work up, including assessment for patent foramen ovale (PFO), would be prudent.

Thank you DocVikingo,

I have not felt anything of the sympthoms, since the very first flight. And not any other sympthoms either for that matter. Have been working, flying and excersicing regularly since the Mexico trip and I feel just fine.

I don't fully understand the medical terms, but I think that what you tell me is to be very attentive with my future diving, should any sympthoms occur. And if they do, you suggest me to do a medical checkup (what is PFO?). Is that correct?

Thanks again for answering my question.

Brgds Maggy
