hello..

im new to diving and have realized you cant dive alone .. i want to go diving and dont have a buddy.. my question is , if i go on dive boats will they assign me a buddy for the dives?

thanks

Finding a dive buddy after reaching the boat is not usually an issue. Even if you have to dive with a crew member they will find someone for you to dive with.

Yes, or they'll have you doing group dives. That's where a group of divers follow the leader around the reef.

I have gone on dives without having my own buddy along. I have been paired up with no big issue. However, I HIGHLY recommend that you talk with the person you are paired up with about signals, gear placements (where is the octo), OOA issues, and practice before you get into the water. You should be comfortable with your own gear and your ability to take care of yourself in the water. Sometimes the INSTABUDDY might not be the best buddy. Understand each other's gear and comfort level so that if there is a situation, it is a recoverable problem. If you have reservations, talk to the dive operator when you book. If you just don't feel comfortable with whom you are paired, don't hesitate to let the DM know so that you have a good experience. Never think that you are being rude if you protest who you are paired up with. In the end, it is your dive, and most importantly, it is your life!

Happy diving and dive safe!

In so called "warm water" destinations it is most likely that the crew will hook you up with a buddy/ group or dive with you directly.

In places that are a bit more "adventuresome" you may find it awkward to find someone to dive with . Most of the divers there will already have a plan in place and an added buddy can cause issues they are not interested in at that time.

Many boats will say on the phone "sure, come onboard and we will find you someone to dive with" but don't be surprised to find out that there is no one interested in taking you along when you get there.

It is not a slight against you. It's just that pepole in those locations have a set way of doing things.

I've always travelled alone and have never had a problem. They have always assigned another diver with me or made us a threesome.

You are already using the most powerful buddy finder. Scuba board.

I was visiting Tampa in Feb. and on a whim started asking around on the board about diving in the area. I was barraged with options and information. Hooked up with a great charter (Shameless plug for Capt. Ty out of St. Pete) and dove with some very experienced and gracious local guys. (Hi to Scott5644, Johnny Bravo and Dan) We discussed the dive plan (which involved sacrificing the newb if it got dicey ;)) but settled on a less harsh plan.

All you have to do is post on the board.

I try to arrange buddies through SB once I have a trip planned. I've been very successful most of the time, but not always.

I now carry a pony, and will dive solo, but most OPs are not going to allow that unless they know you as a diver.

Most resort Boat Ops will pair you off with someone. The real question then becomes what kind of buddy are you with?
