i had an operation a few years ago. they changed my heart valve. i'd like to ask if there's anyone here who has had an operation like this, and whether he/she continued diving after that operation.. thanks a lot in advance..

The heart has multiple valves. Which one was replaced?

What is your current cardiac and general health status?

Have you asked your cardiologist or personal physician their advice on the subject?

Best regards.

it was an aort valve

thank you

Welcome to the bionic world.

BE SURE to get clearance from your surgeon, cardiologist and primary care physician prior to resuming diving. I carry a note signed by them that states that it is OK for me to dive. I had one place refuse to let me dive, until I produced the letter.

I had the aortic valve and the ascending aorta replaced December 3, 2001 - I had an anuerysm. I chose to have the "artificial" valve installed, since it would men a better quality of life and not require additional surgery as often. This means that I must take Coumadin for the rest of my life, but that sure beats the alternative.

I have been on five dive trips to Roatan, Honduras, since the operation and have had no symptoms whatsoever. Be sure that your dive buddy knows of your circumstance and knows what to do, just in case.

If you would like to discuss this less publicly, feel free to contact me at Aeolus@scubadiving.com.

Good luck. Dive Safe and Dive Often. :)

I have had 2 mitral valve replacements. The first one was a pig valve and didn't quite work out, so it was replaced with a mechanical valve. I returned to diving within 3 1/2 months of my operation, which was almost 3 years ago, and have been diving ever since. I do shore diving in cold water, sometimes multiple dives on the same day, and have no problems.

So, if your cardiologist clears you and you are getting monitored on a regular basis, you should be able to dive to your heart's content (no pun intended).
