UPDATED: 2:46 pm EST December 2, 2006

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- One person died and three others were hospitalized Saturday morning after a car went out of control, left the Sawgrass Expressway and landed in a canal, fire officials said.

Coral Springs Fire Department crews were called to the scene, just west of University Drive, at 8:34 a.m. and learned that the driver of the vehicle had swam to the shore with the assistance of bystanders.

Three others were believed to still be in the vehicle, which was submerged in approximately 25 foot of water.

The department's dive rescue teams pulled all three passengers from the vehicle, and fire department personnel were able to revive some of the patients while transporting them to the hospital.

Two passengers were taken in critical condition to Northwest Medical Center, where one was later pronounced dead.

The other passenger was taken to Coral Springs Medical Center in critical condition.

Their updated conditions have not been released.

The driver of the vehicle went University Medical Center and was expected to be released Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.

One firefighter received sutures for an injury sustained while searching the water for victims.

The Florida Highway Patrol was conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
