Hey there scubaboard!!

My brother (24) and I (25) are driving across the US this summer. We're both certified Rescue Divers, looking for the right place to get DM training. He'll be looking at grad schools along the way, while I'll be looking to continue my education in diving. We're from Massachusetts, but we're headed south towards his choice schools. Our plan is infinitely flexible at this point, but we'll be on the road by the end of the week!!

I've been looking for DM internships in the US, and haven't found anything that really fit my criteria. A few of the veteran divers in my life had mentioned these internships as a great way to get into the business. Unfortunately the internships I've found cost thousands of dollars.

I'm not trying to get certified for free, I understand the costs associated with DM training. But the picture painted by my experienced friends was that this was a more affordable option.

So my question for you scubaboard, is where did you get certified? Is there a dive shop near you that offers these kinds of internships? Has anyone completed an internship?

I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. The shops that do offer an internship won't return my emails. I'm willing to cold call dive shops and talk about the available dm internship positions, but there are simply too many shops to start calling at random. I'd like some fellow scubaboard member recommendations. I'm no longer strictly interested in unpaid internships (although preferred), I'm also open to paying for the training if there's a job opportunity available when the training is complete.

I'm trying to follow the dream, and finding it harder than I anticipated.. But I have not lost hope,

Thanks for your help scubaboard,

where is your brother looking? NC Coast usually has good stuff if you can prove your diving ability. NCSU has a good diving opportunity for leadership, it's not anywhere near as expensive, but no guaranteed jobs as we don't use DM's
