Please vote for Venture or Rec wing for singles. Need Help.
I have read all the threads about this topic, but need help in making a decision.

I will primarily dive singes in warm water. No future plans of diving doubles, but might be nice to have the rare option. I like DIR concept and will be trying longhose and bungies backup. I have credit at a store that carries Diverite and got a TransPlate (thanks to this board).

I have a Venture and a Rec wing, but need to make a decision and send the other one back. The Rec will be used on a single with the gusset snugged. I have looked and LCD, Oxycheq and Halcyon wings for design comparisons. Here are my thoughts so far...

Venture
- designed specifically for singles, but the wing is like a large triangle.
- It almost looks like a handglider
- It is about 2 inches longer than Rec and 3-4inches wide at butt
- Does this tend to have tank wrap since the butt is so wide? Trim issues?

Rec
- designed as a fair doubles and fair single (dual tasking)
- not a donut, but shaped like a LCD wing
- actually looks much more streamlined and compact than the Venture
- Any problems venting air? (U-shaped)
- Any serious problems with the idea of a gusset control and DIR concepts.
I know the gusset uses a bungie, but DR does not consider them "bungie"
(remember diving primarily open warm water)

Thanks for any input.
I am really confused on this topic and need to stick with a diverite product.

For single-tank, warm-water diving I liked the Venture better than the Rec. But it had its drawbacks ...

- The butt dump was on the tank side of the wing, rather than on the plate side. Although the pull string was fed through a gusset at the bottom of the wing, so that it was easily accessible, I found that having the dump on that side of the wing made using the butt dump more difficult.

- For some reason that I was never able to figure out, my Venture wing had a tendency to take on water ... sometimes a LOT of water ... during a dive. This reduces the effective lift of the wing. In some cases, significantly.

For these two reasons, I sold my Venture wing (which I otherwise thought was one of the better DR designs).

For warm-water, single-tank diving I think the Rec isn't an optimal choice. It's certainly doable, but it's way more wing than you need. Choosing a smaller, more streamlined design like the Oxy Mach V or DSS Torus would be much better.

If you will be diving only singles, get the Venture wing.
If you will be diving doubles get the rec wing or a classic wing, the rec wing will accomodate singles too but not idealy you are far better off getting the correct wing for the correct number of tanks.
wearing rec wing or classic wing with singles will cause tank wrap, similar to wrapping your tank like a hotdog in a bun!
I've never had any issues with water in my Venture wing.

Venture
- it seems as if the wider rear might tend to tank wrap more.
- the Rec is cinched in and skinnier that the venture.
- too bad the Travel wing is not made to fit the TransPlate.

Don't make this a bigger thing than it needs to be. Everyone who has much experience at all has their favorite pieces of gear. But, within some pretty broad limits most any wing will do most any job. Most of the folks who I see changing around wings are doing so because they can afford different gear sets and they dive so much in varied conditions it is worth it to them to spend the money. Or, they get their gear at discounts. Or, they change situations, like doubles to singles and reverse, frequently enough it is worth it to have separate rigs.

The Rec wing is a good all around wing with adequate lift for most any task. It is not the best at much of anything. But, with one exception, it gets the job done at a reasonable price. Plus, it has the advantage of allowing me to dive the same rig in most circumstances. Same rig means more comfort, less expense and better muscle memory.

The one exception is if you have a top heavy body type and are diving large steel tanks. Then you are advised to get a wing that has its' lift biased to the high part of your body.

Buy a Rec Wing.

Venture wing. When you decide to go doubles, buy a classic. Nothing wrong with the rec, its just not the best for either job.

i had a Venture, and it was ok ... with the limitations NWGratefulDiver mentions

i now have a Halcyon Pioneer and simply love it

I liked that about it, but then, I didn't cut off the "thingy."

I didn't either ... but at the time I was doing a lot of dives with AL80's and MP72's, and when the wing wraps around the tank, having the valve on that side of the wing actually makes using the butt dump less effective.

That's probably why every other wing manufacturer puts it on the side that normally faces the backplate ...
