This is a video one of our customers forwarded to us. We don’t know the characters involved, but it provides a very good reminder about the importance of using a dive flag. So many of the dive floats/flags that are used for SCUBA have some significant weaknesses.

Often, dive floats that are small and steamlined, but have so little buoyancy that a moderate current will pull it under. Other commonly used floats that are larger and have considerable buoyancy, are round and are difficult to pull against a current, very difficult to tow through the surf and limit the divers mobility and consequently are not very popular (or even practical) for many locations.

MAKO offers a dive flag/float solution for SCUBA divers that addresses all these issues and more. We start with an extremely tough, plastic life guard float. This is what ocean rescue would refer to as a rescue can. It has several hand holds which make it extremely easy to allow a diver to rest on the surface and will hold up to years of very hard use.

This streamlined design was developed to allow life guards to tow the rescue device through large surf and rough water (using a shoulder tow strap). SCUBA divers will realize the same benefits of the streamlined shape when swimming through calm water, towing against a current or making their way through the surf zone. The combination of streamlined shape and considerable buoyancy will prevent this float from being pulled underwater by the current (within reason of course).

We have added a rubber belt and an external 2-lb weight which keeps the can upright. This ensures that the dive flag, which is mounted on the same 2-inch wide rubber strap will remain upright and is self- righting in most any sea conditions a SCUBA diver might encounter.

We offer two options for a dive flag. The standard flag and also a “Florida Legal Flag” which includes an integrated flag stiffener and the flag itself meets the minimum legal size of 12X12 inches.

You may also notice a small plastic ball which we affix to the top of the fiberglass flag pole. This feature is intended to increase safety on the boat or on shore by reducing the potential for personal injury should someone fall on top of the float/flag assembly.

This is a slightly more expensive solution than some of the economy dive floats on the market, but our customers have found the increased safety and ease of use of this product is worth the extra few dollars.

Dive safe!

I was disappointed to find this was an advertisement rather than the news the tittle suggests.

Well. It IS in the manufacturer's own forum.
