Authorities have suspended a search for a diver off the Margaret River coast with new information placing doubt on whether anyone is missing.

An air and sea search was launched on Friday afternoon after reports a man went diving near The Box surf break, but did not leave the water.

It is now thought those reports were mistaken, police said.

This happens often. I have seen a few cases like that in Sydney, a person on shore phones 000 (our emergency number) reporting a scuba diver or snorkeller or spearo in trouble. In nearly every case, they are not and by the time emergency services arrive, the diver has come ashore and left.

Similar thing happens with kite surfers/wind surfers. Someone on shore calls 000 and it comes to Marine Rescue (where I volunteer) and invariably the person is okay, just having a rest.

However, better in all cases that they call rather than do nothing.
