The coroner is investigating and it sounds like they're going to be analyzing the tank gas.

Coroner: Diver who died in Monterey Bay was Alameda man, 65 | The Salinas Californian | thecalifornian.com

A diver who went missing and was found dead by rescuers in waters off a Monterey beach has been identified as a 65-year-old man from Alameda,
according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s unit.

Jean-Pierre Makeyev died after scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean near the Coast Guard Pier in Monterey on Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

Deputies said resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Makeyev died in the emergency department of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

The coroner’s office conducted a postmortem examination this afternoon, deputies said.

The cause of death is undetermined pending further investigation of equipment, toxicology and air samples, deputies said.

Makeyev is the fourth diver to die in Monterey Bay waters this year, including a 43-year-old woman and two teenagers.
