The diver exited the water and was overheard commenting on how cold the water was. Once on the dock, the diver removed his gear and then collapsed.
The dive buddy performed cpr. A police officer arrived and began performing chest compressions. A few minutes later, ems arrived. The police officer was relieved by another diver. The chest compressions continued. At some point an electronic device possibly a defribulator was utilized. The diver did not regain consciousness. The diver was transported to the hospital.
According to the dive buddy, the diver did not make it. The exact cause of death was not disclosed.
Unfortunately, the incident ended up tragically. Diving related or not, it did reinforce several well established practices that might save someone in the future.
1. Know how to and practice performing cpr.
2. Let everyone know that there is a diver down, someone can call ems and others can help perform cpr until ems arrives.
3. The topography of many dive sites may require several people to evacuate a victim, so even if you do not have medical training you can still help.
