Diver Accident 4/17/2011 Monterey

I have been informed that the Coast Guard brought in a diver today. My friend was bringing in his boat and an emergency vehicle pulled up and told him to get out of the way because the Coast Guard was bringing in a diver and giving him CPR. He asked if they stabilized him and he said he could not answer that. Does not look good.

This is all the information that he told me. I hope the diver is OK.

I had also heard about the accident,the diver didn't make it. He was diving off a boat that might not be a certified dive boat I have been told.

i guess start of a season. bad conditions and no self conditioning. please be smart do week or two of really good cardio, before getting into the water. it is 46F lately.

[Can't help myself] If a diver died, it must be the fault of the poor instruction and lax agency standards. It certainly couldn't have been the result of something else! (Now where is that tongue-in-cheek symbol?)

She was diving off a private boat, one of the regular private boats.
If it's who I think it was, she's a ScubaBoard NorCal regular.
Rapid ascent from 90' at Ball-Buster, symptoms consistent with
AGE.

Linda and I had finished our first dive on the deep shale and were
starting to pull the hook when we caught the CG side of the VHF
traffic. Since we couldn't hear the boat side, I assumed it was
down in Carmel. Just as we finished pulling the hook I caught
just a bit of the boat side: "Ball-Buster". And then enough
description of the boat that I knew which boat it was. We headed
for Ball-Buster and met them probably between Hopkins and
Lovers. The CG was about a minute behind so we stayed out
of it, and followed them in. When got back to the dock, it became
apparent that the gear had been left. Michael Murphy volunteer
to bring his boat to help look. Michael on Sea Hound and Linda and I on Black Dog spent about
three hours running patterns trying to locate the gear with no
success. Michael dove Ballbuster when we gave up searching and sent the
boat's anchor up (they had cut the line) on a lift bag and we
picked it up. Escapade was starting to run patterns when we headed
in.

Outcome did not look positive, but CHOMP hadn't given up at 2:55
pm (I talked to one of her buddies who was at CHOMP).

Best hopes for a good outcome.

Since when does Monterey have seasons? The only season I know of is Jan 1 through Dec 31 with breaks due to weather.

Don't know why but it is even more sad to hear that it was a regular.

I dove with Kristina (pacificgal) many many times.
She is quite experienced diver.
She is in intensive care.
my prayers with her.

Really hits home to hear a Norcal regular was involved in an accident. I really hope she pulls through.
Any ideas on what caused the rapid ascent?

Edit:
First two posts states that the diver was a "he". Was this just misheard in the hype of the moment or were there actually 2 accidents today?

Good news chuck, pacificgal has good post, don't want them to go away. 90' without gear is very good unless dumped at surface, but still good, just hope did not come up to fast.
