I Just started my DM training..I asked the my instructor if I will work with students to help them on their skills..he said no no...I can not do that ..only instructors teach..I just look and observe!!!
I thought as a Dive Master in training,,,I can help students interms of demonstrating a skill even one on one...any feedback of what I can do in the pool or open water with studtns and what I can not do???

well im not fimilar with the specifics of every agency.
but normally you can work with ow students under direct supervision
and with certified divers under indirect supervision
now some agencies are very clear what that means and some require some interpation by the instructor
so...... do i dare ask what agency?

As a PADI DM, you can lead OW students on the tour portion of training dives 2-4, accompany OW students during the nav exercises during dive 4, with the group, either at the surface or underwater while the instructor conducts a skill with an individual student.
Basiclly you are there as a supervisor. You should be able to help OW students with skills after the instructor has demonstrated the skill first. In my experience, I've had instructors let me help and I've had instructors tell me to just watch over the students.
Hope this helps.

Cheers

As a DMC you can only do what ever the instructor allows you to do, he is ultimately liable for your safety and that of any students.

If you're just starting out in the process perhaps you will be graduated into one-on-one time with those struggling to find comfort with the mask off or reg removal/replace and demonstrations etc. During the DMC you should probably get some experience leading OW divers while under direct supervision of an instructor, but you have to walk before you run. You'll be doing skills demonstrations for "students" who are already certified and mimicking ornery as best they can before you see real-life customers perhaps.

i agree
talk to the instructor about it
mabye later in your training he will let you step up a little more
small steps

I had similar experiences thru my DMC program that others had. Some instructors will let you demo a skill or work "on the side" with a student(s) having a problem with a particular skill. Other instructors wanted me only as supervisors, etc.

Same here. Many times the instructors will let me help the students practice their skills after they have run through the skills with the students themselves. I will make skill demonstrations upon the instructions from the instructors and under his supervision. But then they allowed this because we have ran through the skill circuit many times I have been assisting with IDC pool sessions with a course director also.

Hope this helps too.

I just did my first confined water with the instuctor and the students. He did not ask me to supervise the students or help them...He just say stay around in the pool and you can practice with students!!!!!
I am shocked...do you guys think this is a DM training?????should I quit??? and do it in another place?

As a Divemaster Candidate, you're just a glorified Rescue/Advanced Diver!! Once you get further in the class you will learn demo skills and how to work with students. Once you become a DM you can then help....Don't quit Learn!!!Watch!!!and Listen to how your Instructor deals with students.
