Hello, scubaboard. This is my first post and a big question I have. What are the requirements to become a divemaster? Logged dives, age, etc. The SSI site doesn't say.

Also, what are the requirements to become a Dive Con?

Thanks in advance.

there is no divemaster in the SSI system. masterdiver, divecon, then instructor.

masterdiver = aowd + stress&rescue + 50 dives, min 15yo

divecon = masterdiver + divecon course + cpr + first aid + 60 dives, min 18yo, apprenticeship time and most important shop sponsor.

instructor = you get the picture

Actually, the new SSI standards include distinctions between Dive Guide (DG), Dive Master (DM) and Dive Con (Dive Control Specialist/Certified Assistant Instructor)

The Dive Master prerequisites are: 18 years old, certified as a Dive Guide or equivalent, 50 open water dives totaling 32 hours or more.

Certification requirements are: Completed Dive Guide certification and Science of Diving Specialty program, First Aid/CPR/O2, Insurance, 60 Open Water Dives totaling 40 hours or more.

Dive Con has similar requirements with additional academic and pool sessions, 75 open water dives, totaling 50 hours or more.

Dive Guide requires AOW + Stress Rescue, so pretty much the same requirements as the old Dive Con standards, but now there are distinct standards for Dive Guide, Dive Master, and Dive Con. Dive Guides/Dive Master may not teach Scuba Skills Updates, or teach any portion of the Open Water class (under direct or indirect supervision).

The LDS can also add additional requirements. We were required to take the equipment repair course and have a scientific diver certification for a local springs that OW classes are taught at. Once you have completed the course, you will need to have insurance to be an active Divecon.
If you are interested in the Divecon program, it is best to go talk to the LDS. Unlike PADI or NAUI, SSI requires their professionals to be affiliated with an actual shop. You cannot be an independent Divecon.

Prerequisites
Be at least 18 years old
Current medical exam (not more than 1 year old)
Advanced open water or equivalent
Logged no less than 40 dives totalling 25 hours or more
Have logged significant experience in night/limited vis, navigation, deep and boat diving
Completed Stress & Rescue program
