Anyone have any opinion about Divemaster Internships Cozumel? Run by Mike Sobel. A friend's son is looking at doing his DM with them. All input appreciated.

AKA Gopro Cozumel.

Ive known Mike a few years. He runs a great operation. I know a lot of people that have went thru his program. A large number of his students find jobs in the field. They also like to have their fun of course but he runs a very good program.

Just in the spirit of clarification - for those who care - his students may find jobs in the field - in other destinations, but very few if any have landed positions in Cozumel with anyone other than working for Mike in cohorts that follow. I know not everyone is focused just on Cozumel - but I feel that is a point that should be noted and clarified.

Divemaster courses are offered through just about any dive shop in Cozumel and most if not all will give the option of an internship. To become an Instructor, one must actually go through a Course Director (Jorge Marin, Mike Sobel, and a few others) - we also have a few options there. PADI IDC's are typically offered by the other Course Directors twice a year and are in the time frame immediately preceding a PADI Examiner being scheduled to do the actual certification of Instructor Candidates.

May I ask why it's so difficult to land work in Cozumel for newly certified DM's ? Dive shop expectations for seasoned DM's with more experience ? Lots of competition for these jobs ? Are naturalized citizens given preference over foreigners ? Just curious - Thanks -

Yes,yes, and yes. To legally work in Mexico have to do lots of paperwork. Yes locals are given preference as they should imho. Divemaster is a very good job for Cozumel. I'm sure Christi and Dave can give better explanation of all the hurdles.

As okdiverokc says, it's really for the same reason that it would be difficult for a Mexican citizen to come to the US legally to do work that pays well and that US citizens and legal residents want to do.

Citizens and legal residents with work permits can work for income in Mexico. Others can't. They don't care if citizens are native-born or naturalized, and there's no legal preference for citizens over resident foreigners with work permits.

Does anyone honestly think there's much of anyplace in the world where you can just show up as a foreigner and legally get a job?

Yes, it is difficult for foreigners to get DM, or even Instructor Jobs in Mexico. The general rule used in Cozumel is you can have one foreigner for every eight Mexicans. Dressed Divers get away with it as they count all the maids and bartenders in their hotel, and use mostly short term Europeans for DMs. There are a few other ways but mostly not legal…and can result in real time in a Mexcian jail before being rudely deported and told not to come back. Happened a few months ago.

Dillehay.. You mean Dressel Divers that calls the Iberostar A.I. "home" in Coz. You couldn't pay me to dive with Dressel and one of their newly certified "DM's" that has 1 one dive logged for every 20 dives I've logged. To each their own but that kind of op is not for me. I prefer to dive with a local resident DM who has spent so many years on the reefs of coz he knows them like the back of his hand, has worked his way up over the years, logged 1000's and 1,000's of dives as a DM, and quite simply knows his business where he is.

With regard to tridacna's friend who has a son that is thinking about being a DM and pursuing it for a living, I hope he understands that diving is a fun sport and hobby for all of us but day-in and day-ouit is a grind just like any other job. The days come for them just like all of us when that alarm clock goes off and the last thing they want to do is get out of bed, haul tanks and gear, get wet and cold, deal with idiots as there will always be some, and then watch all the vacationers depart on their merry way (hopefully having been handed some tips that will be shared) so they can enjoy thier beers and cocktails. Meanwhile, the DM's have a few more hours of work to do hauling tanks, rinsing gear, assisting the captain with refueling, and whatever else is necessary. Being a DM is a tough, hard job and I am always amazed how DM's can greet everyone with a smile every day and not ever lose their cool.

I think when your friend's son sees what is involved with being a DM he will conclude it is far better to be a dive tourist and get a job that pays enough he can travel and dive.

I welcome all responses and would love to hear from any career DM's out there who disagree with what I have posted.
