Has anyone every heard of a dive club or a LDS that offers swap meets? It seems like there is a great secondary market for used equipment, and you really don't need to look any further than the ScubaBoard classifieds or eBay to see what I mean.

The reason that I was thinking about this is that my local ski store just sent a flyer for their annual swap meet. They hold at least one every season and sponsor it through their ski club and offer some nice discounts on their gear that is not moving off the shelves quickly. Since many dive shops sponsor dive clubs, you would think that more of them would have a similar set-up.

Any opinions?

SECONN dive club does... (I am not a member, but heard about it at the Frozen Fin dive)..

Description

SWAP MEET

SECONN ANNUAL SWAP Meet, April 23rd at
the Polish American Club in CT. Come along with
family and friends to buy new or swap used gear.
This year it will be outside. Event opens to the
public at 10am and goes to 2pm. There is a silent
auction and a tank raffle.

In SoCal there is a chain of sporting goods stores called Sport Chalet. Each May several of them sell used gear on consignment. There is another chain called Play It Again Sports that sells used sporting gear.

The dive shop I work for has a yearly one. There is a fee to divers to put their gear in the sale but if they want to use their profits to purchase items in the shop, then there is no fee at all.

The LDS here used to have a couple days a year for the customers to set up in the parking lot and do the flea market thing.
He put a stop to it because some folks ( just the really dumb ones)started trying to hold him responsible for the goods they bought. A few bad apples can spoil everything. From what I hear a few friendships ended too.

Central/South Jersey has a Diving Flea market every Year in Tom's River.

wow, tell you what, I think if my LDS found out I was setting up swap meets in their region, they'd write me off and give me the cold shoulder from now on...but swap meets are great...i'll be looking up the why by SECONN.
