Tried it, didn't work well. I went with the transplate harness and wing. Much better setup for dual tanks and is quite comfortable and easy to get in and out of. The transpac works well without the backplate, I dove it with single tanks. Problem seemed to be stability of the dual HP steel 100's. You can fit this setup with a stabalizer bar, but the transplate harness is much cleaner. I dove a single steel 130 with a 30 cu ft pony which wasn't much less weight.

Just out of curiosity, why would you? It is like combining a vest and bp and wing to me.

Just thought adding a plate would take about 10-12 lbs off and would help stabilize the rig for drysuit diving. Take plate off and use the rig for travel.

I can see your line of thought....but would go with a regular bp and wing...very stable.

If you have the backplate, then adding webbing and D-rings, etc. to the bp is a better solution. I have both, and dive both, but I find it better to just switch the wing I need to either the Transpac or the BP. The Transpac was designed to work without a backplate, and IMHO that is how it works best.

Also, the cost of webbing and hardware is minimal if you already have the backplate and wing.

A buddy of mine switched to doubles using a Transpac. He found that he had a great deal of difficulty doing valve drills. He got rid of it, bought a Hammerhead plate, bought some rigging and weight pockets for $160 total. The Transpac while more comfortable because of padding, may not be well suited for doubles.

I started with a transpac & rec wing. I found it to be an excellent single tank set up.
However when I progressed to doubles, I switched to a backplate & harness.

The transpac and rec wing worked ok with twin al 80's, but the rec wing was too small for a pair of twin 104 steels. I also found the harness too floppy with twin steel tanks.

I have a backplate and single tank adapter (obsolete on newer backplates), I use with my rec wing for single tanks, and a larger wing for my double steels.
