I'm searching for resorts in the Pacific with good, maybe great, house reefs. I'll define a house reef as a dive that I can do directly from the resort/dive shop without a boat ride or a long swim. Also the resort/dive shop should allow us to dive without a dive master, to we can set our own timing and pace.

I'll set the gold standard, in my experience, at Wakatobi's house reef. We did this dive everyday for the 10 days we were there and never got bored.

Thanks for the help

I was going to say Wakatobi.....

Not a lot of that sort of thing in the Pacific in my experience, you might think of the Sipadan area (not that island now but the others around it) Or Sangalaki

Maybe some outlying islands in Fiji but i don't know for sure

While there aren't many resorts with house reefs, many of the dive sites in Kona, Hawaii can be reached from shore (but may require some driving to get to). This is great you want to have some independance in your diving. Kona doesn't have the colorful soft coral of the Indo-pacific, but there's a lot of great macro photography and some pelagics if you know where to look.

definitely Uepi, in the Solomons. An amazing home reef, straight off the dive jetty. Sharks almost guaranteed on every dive, great fish life, huge fans, barrell sponges, even garden eels right out the front. We're just back, I did 34 dives, 20 right off the jetty. Shot mating octopus 10 metres down, directly below the jetty - wow. I dive at Uepi twice a year - and they have real trouble getting me away from that reef! another guest showed me a photo she'd taken of me with 19 sharks around me! - yes.....19!!!! And right under the "Welcome" jetty, all of 100 foot from the dive jetty!

They know me, and trust my diving ability, and I often dive solo. Even with my buddy (husband) along, we never use a dive master or guide. My dives are often more than 100 minutes.

For a change, you can catch the boat to Uepi Point - about 1 whole minute away, and dive the incoming tide - an amazing spot, and use the current to bring you back to the dive shop.

Jill & Grant, who run the resort, always allow divers to dive to their capabilities and experience - and never insist on dive guides for those who prefer not to have them. Once they are sure that you are competent in the water, you can virtually do as you please.

cheers
