Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share my PC dive trip I was on last saturday. We were on a six hr two dive with Cpt Shannon on the Island Diver, first off I will say the Cpt and crew were great. The weather was really nice and the sun was hot. I was on my check out dive for Nitrox and to finish my gulf requirement for AOW. Let me tell you I had a lot of anxiety on this trip, first because I had never been out to sea before and second because I had never dove that deep. Well to make a long story short we splashed on our first dive of the day on station 1 and everything was going smooth then my instructor gives the sign for shark and I think I must have sucked half my tank in the next breath and as I turned to look there was this 6'-8' bul shark within 20' of us. Needless to say my first thought was surface; surface; but my instructor stayed still and just watched so following his lead I did so as well. The shark was just swimming through so we all carried on as normal as could be after that. I made the rest of my dive without to much trouble. Except I believe I got to experince the effects of narcosis while I was down, because I remember freaking out because I could not find my knife but I managed to identify what I was doing and then I carried on. (It probably did not help that I have been reading the excellent book, "Shadow Divers")

Our second dive was a night dive on the Black Bart; it was ok but I still had a little anxiety about this dive as well and I did manage to get hit in the head with the boat; yes I said boat;which later caused me to have a sever headache and some nausea. I was making my way down the no swimline and the current pushed the line under the boat so upon entry I had to go under to get the line so I thought I was under the water deep enough and the waves were 3'-5' and about that time whack something hit me in the head as I looked up I thought it was another diver but no it was just the boat. There was no damage to the boat so I thought all is well and I continued my dive. The rest of the dive went weel with no major incidents and the moon was very beautiful over the water on the way back.

Overall outlook on the weekend was a very descent first experience in the gulf; some very important lessons learned and a big whheeeehhhh as I realize I finished my checkout dives. One positive thing that come out of the weekend was that I officially earned a Hodagg name; my instructor "Uncle Bercie" and another hodagg member titled me with the new name of "Digger Hodagg" that is another story all together.

I look to see everyone out sometime I truly enjoyed my time in the water this last weekend. Much Thanks goes out to Uncle Bersie and Chandra.

Congrats on the HOdagg title and the dives. I've still yet to see a big shark :/ I'm jealous.

Probably a better place for this thread in the FL Conch Forum.

I dove stage 1 9 days ago, we had great viz. Usually do have good viz there, though it can be crappy on the bottom. I've never seen a shark there yet, though it's been extra sharky around PC lately. We had 3 bulls on the Akokee that day & that's only 3 miles away. One of them got a little agressive with me & I bounced a powerhead off his head. Fortunately for him, it didn't go off so he lived. Fortunately for me, it served the purpose & convinced him to leave me alone, so we're both happy.

Glad it worked out for you this weekend, we sweated yesterday. My daughter's OW class had their last 2 dives planned & NOAA was predicting heavy seas. We got out, did the dives & got back in while it was still fairly nice. I imagine it's a bit rough out there right now.
