We'll be staying at Barcelo Maya Palace, about 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. I know they have a dive operator, Dressel Divers, on property. Just wondering whether to go with them or one of the other operators; Diablo Divers, Dive Aventuras.

I've been diving for about 15 years but my girlfriend has about a year under her (weight) belt.

Of the three dive ops you mention, we have been going to Puerto Aventuras almost annually for about five years, and have been very pleased with the level of service, both in the shop and in the water, we receive from Dive Aventuras. Nils, Debbie, and their crew are first rate. We do both ocean and centoes with them, and have always been completely satisfied.

Thanks ibj40. I've heard a lot of good things about Dive Aventuras.

I just listed those 3 operators because they're the only ones I've heard of. I'd be open to other suggestions too.

Diablo is excellent for cenote dives, which you should definitely do at least one day of while your in the Riviera Maya. Dive Aventuras or Aquanauts are both good choices for ocean dives out of Puerto Aventuras. In Akumal, Akumal Dive Adventures on Half Moon Bay are a good shop. I've never had a bad day with them.

We have used Bahia Divers (Dive Center in Riviera Maya - Xpu Ha specialized in cenotes and private groups, Mayan Riviera , Mexico) at XpuHa many times when we were first certified. Their shop is very close to your resort and they were fantastic with new divers giving very close attention. They had 2 DM's in the water with us Suzana and Marie. Their boat is small but safe and we dove in front of the Barcelona and Catalonia Royal Tulum. There are many dive sites all along that area that are quite beautiful. There is almost no current and most of the dives are 50 to 40 fsw. Also there is almost no boat traffic in that area. We also did a cenote dive on a second trip to the area with Bahia. It went very well but was not enjoyable for me as I was too new to be in an overhead environment. Chocmul is a cenote but it has a lot of cave as well.
