Missed you both by a week 17-24.. You may want to go over to the Bonaire talk board and get on the "who's on island list", there are a bunch of people on the list who are on island around that date. Also, come join them(us) at Gibi's on tues nights at 6:30pm , good food and good people. it's a "don't miss" for us. www.bonairetalk.com

Divegirl400, your email address didn't work....???

herman, thank you for the info. However, I can't find the "Who's on the island list" in Bonaire Talk....where am I supposed to look? We will try coming to "Gibi's" on March 23. This is our first trip to Bonaire, so I can't wait!

Here is a link to the correct page http://www.bonairetalk.com/newsgroup/messages/27/137749.html?1075584044

Don't let Gibi's fool you. It's a small place...well actually, it's a kitchen with the tables outside under a tree. The food is great and reasonably priced. Gibi himself is a really nice guy. His menu is hand written every day...whats on it kind of depends on what he feels like cooking that day and is in Papiamentu so he wil have to translate.
The Bonaire talk board has a lot of info and just about anything you want to know about the island. There are a lot of post on what first time visiters should do, restaruants, money and things to bring. They are well worth reading, esp if you are not traveling with experienced Bonaire travelers.

Oh yea, if no one has told you BRING HARD SOLED BOOTIES. The shore is mostly iron stone and coral which is very hard on the feet. There are very few sand beaches on Bonaire. The thin sock-like booties are not thick enough.

Thank you, herman.
I found the list and posted to add our names.
And yes, we have hard soled booties.
Do you have any other advice for us?
My fiance is an experienced diver, but we have hardly ever done shore diving before, so I'm a little nervous.....I've only dove in Caymans and Cozumel. :frown2:

The diving in Bonaire is about as easy as it gets. Long slopes to a dropoff which make entry and exit easy. Most of the best stuff is in 30-40 ft of water so dive times are long. The people are friendly, wave and smile a lot and there are loads of good restaurants. The local currency is the guilder and it's tied to the USD at a rate of 1.77 to 1 or 1 Guilder= $0.56 (about). I just round to $0.50 which makes conversion easy. There are several ATM's on island that you can use your ATM card in. They will give you your choice of Guilders or UDS, either of which are taken on the island except in some of the smaller restaurants. Some restaurants have the prices in guilders (NFL), some in USD and some in both so be sure what "price" you are looking at. It is considered rude to give a customer his check in a restaurant until he has ask for it. This kind of irritates some Americans as we are use to getting it quick, a simple request for you bill is all that's needed (making eye contact with your waiter and "writing" in your palm works great) The food and water is safe to eat/drink so there are no worries about bottled water or ice cubes like some other countries.
There is a $20pp exit tax that you have to pay at the airport. They DO NOT take credit cards so be sure to keep enough cash for this.

Do you know about the web cams?

Here is a link to a good map of Bonaire that you might fine interesting.

Ditto whayt Herman has said- the diving in Bonaire is fantastic. (I can't wait to go back) If you have done the caymans and coz, you will have no problems in Bonaire. The freedom of diving alone can be a little scary at first, but it is awesome once you get used to it. The only thing to remember (which I mention cos I forgot on one of my foirst dives) is to set your compass back to shore!!! it can be quite a long swim back when you are actually swimming parallel to shore - Doh!!!
You will have no worries diving- and have an awesome time.
Say hello to the Salt pier for me- by far my favourite Bonaire Dive-especially at night.

Thanks for all the information ..... we are looking at either Bonaire (1st time) or going back to Cozumel (3rd time) in May and your information has been very helpful. All my shore diving has been in a lake, so I'm a bit anxious about how things really work with the drive & dive concept on Bonaire. Any other words of wisdom you (and munkispank) may have to impart - please post away!!
