Ok make me smart. Are the dive alert gismos that hook into the BC's any good. I just got a black diamond and am wondering about the dive alert that plugs into the power inflator.

They are excellent, get one!! We were on a liveaboard many years ago when 2 divers got caught by a current and were about 1/4 mile behind the boat when they surfaced. Although we saw them and they got back on their own safely, when they returned they said they had blown their whistles, but nobody on the boat heard a thing. If they would have blown a Dive Alert, we would have heard them with no problem.

I have the original one that only works above water on my inflator, but my husband has the one that can sound off under water as well (it quacks under water), not that he uses it much.

Scuba Diving magazine did a bit of a study a few years back comparing how far different signaling devices could be seen or heard, under a few common diving conditions. Intuitively, volume and pitch were factors, and the Dive Alert could be heard a fair bit further than whistles, which might be important if the situation were truly urgent.

A down side is some people find them difficult to rinse, dry and keep from rusting out, because of all the internal cavities and crevices.

I have the newer one that also quacks under water, and also don't find that feature much use. If I were buying another one, I'd be getting the original surface-only version, as it's smaller, lighter and more streamlined.

I use the original 'dive alert' which works only above water, works great, but have had issues with small air leaks where it hooks into my pressure inflator, by the way I use an Air 2 system, I sent it back once and for small fee they worked on in, but it seems to be leaking again. I have had mine for 5 years, I'd buy one again if given the choice.
