Just got the notification that I had one, but when I go in to check it, it's not there?
disappearing PM?

This very rarely happens when someone tries to send private message "spam". Once we get the alert we delete all of the offending user's outgoing PM's to remove the spam. As far as I can remember this has only happened two or three times this year, beyond that there are very few ways to have a PM erased but it is possible.
