Hi all,
I'm new here, just certified last year. I see alot of acronyms around here such as DIR. can someone define this?
Thanks

DIR-diver.com - What's DIR really about?

If you are really curious about DIR, you happen to have one of the senior GUE instructors near you. Bob (ALL ABOUT SCUBA - Bob Sherwood. Vestal, NY) is amazing, and well worth taking Primer with, and more advanced courses as you progress.

If you want to dive with some of us who have taken DIR instruction and see what it's about, I see you're very close to Dutch Springs. A bunch of us dive there regularly and I for one am happy to dive with you. Drop me a line sometime. I will be there next weekend.

Best,
Ari

Doing It Right which indicates the rest are DIW.

I am an avid supporter of DIW

FWIW: The DIR crowd sometimes get a rep as dive Nazis. Some of them truely desrerve the label (and a very vocal about it), but I have met a lot of DIR trained divers just interested in a system that goes beyond the bare minimum skills taught by many agencies. The do have some worthwhile ideas even you do don't buy into their system 100%.

I've met DIR nazis and none DIR nazis. Personally I could give a rip how others wish to dive. I just find it curious why others care how I dive. If they think after several thousand dives that I'm not safe enough for them then don't dive with me :). I'm very ok with that.

Normally, I wouldn't blatantly go off topic, but since you asked I will. I care how you and others dive, because if it puts MY life at risk, my BUDDY's life at risk, or the ENVIRONMENT at risk then I feel I should correct your (general your, i dont know you personally) diving style so that it doesn't do the aforementioned things. Other than that dive/risk your life in any way you see fit :D

Just remember, while you have freedom to do whatever you want, you dont have the freedom to encroach on my enjoyment or happiness.

Cave Diver has a great summarized explanation, which is a great read and helps the newcomer understand what DIR is all about. You can also check out explanations of DIR via the GUE (Welcome | Global Underwater Explorers) or UTD (Unified Team Diving) websites.

I would also recommend reading this:Doing It Right: The Fundamentals of Better Diving - PDF | Global Underwater Explorers
For $15 its a great read and a very worthy purchase.

You wouldn't be in danger diving with me no matter how I dress. So what's the point? I wouldn't need correcting from you or anyone else. Silly boy.

And I get called an ass by an idiot yet it all continues. What fun.
