I just don't log dives
I'm considering purchasing an Olympus 3040Z and the PT-010 housing. But I'm concerned about the maintenance of the o-rings and such.
What is actually involved in maintaining one of these housings? I notice lots of buttons which means lots of o-rings right? I've never owned an underwater camera before so I don't know anything about maintaining.

Maybe I should start with a cheap Sealife to learn from first. That way if I ruin it it won't be so costly.

If you can find a good deal at Ritz camera, they have a good extended warranty. I think mine was 200.00 on a 700.00 camera. Covers anything (including water damage) as long as you can bring back the camera (even in pieces)... does not cover loss/theft.

And, if they don't carry that model or can't fix it, then you get your purchase price as store credit toward a new camera. I read the warranty paperwork in the store for about 20 minutes looking for any 'catches'.... I asked about water damage ... covered.

So I figured in 2 or 3 years (can't remember how long), I could 'drop' the camera if I'm in the market for a new one:wink:
I thought it was a pretty good deal.
Another option would be equipment insurance.

here's a copy of the pertinent info:

you probably could get the button o rings replaced, but i think you are talking years for that, the cover o ring you can take out, and you are supposed to do that everytime you use it:

take it out, clean with a lint free cloth, clean grove and re grease the o ring and replace

new o ring is £10

Appreciate the responses. The insurance sounds like a good backup plan just in case.

Just paranoid I guess. Don't want to spend $700+ and then ruin it.

Basically, all the buttons are pretty much "sealed". The only O-ring maintenance you'll be doing yourself will be the large main one. This should be regularly inspected and lubed with a VERY thin veneer of silicone grease.

BTW, we have about $8500 worth of u/w video & still camera equipment that we insure through DEPP. Their premiums are very reasonable plus you have the option of insuring items for flood as well. AAMOF we insure ALL our scuba gear (about $25K in total) through these people. They "plug the holes" in household insurance, esp the one about taking the gear out of the country!

DEPP also has excellent customer service. When we were unfortunate enough to lose a Sea & Sea lens while at Crystal River two years ago, we had the replacement from DEPP in very short order. Beats the heck out of "extended warranty", IMHO.

BTW, here's a link to DEPP:

Thanks for the link. I'll defintely check it out. Especially since it's just for dive equipment.

I agree with ~Submariner~. The large yellow O-ring is all you'll have to maintain and it's very easy. After each use, soak the housing, closed and sealed, in fresh water. Push all those little buttons a time or two to release any salt crystals that may have accumulated. Remove from the water and dry with a soft cloth. Remove the yellow O-ring, inspect it and re-grease it. Every so often, I wash the O-rings in a mild soap, dry them with a LINT FREE cloth and grease them again. Also, don't forget to clean the channel the O-rings sits in. With the PT-10 housing, that channel may have a few drops of water in it...this is normal. But sand and impurities can gather there and it needs to be clean.

I've been using DEPP for about 7 years and I don't get my cameras anywhere near the water without coverage. I've had a few claims over the years and DEPP has always repaired or/and replaced the item quickly. Best dive related money I spend every year.

I have gone to a seminar by professionals at Our World Underwater who also suggested that for maintainance on digital cameras, they always use air to dust the body when changing lenses on their digital cameras.=-)
