For those who wonder (as I was curious about this at one point), there is a huge difference between GUE and George Irvine. Hopefully, some of the members on this board will mention more points.

George Irvine is an a**hole, but a great diver.
GUE is a training organization made of great divers.

George is the head of the WKPP.
GUE divers are used on the project.

George is an individual
GUE is an organization

Cheers,
Sherpa

George Irvine starts with a "G"
GUE ... D'oh!

I don't agree that George is an a$$hole. That's way too simplistic. Sure, he's rough at times but that mainly applies on public Internet forums in response to a fairly specific set of subjects. In private email, phone, and in person I don't find him that way at all.

He's been very helpful and always friendly during my private dealings and diving with him. I consider him a friend and would hope he reciprocates.

As for the "what is DIR" question, yes, there is a difference between GUE DIR and WKPP/G3 DIR, not much difference, but some. Personally I follow the WKPP/G3 version more closely. One example, GUE uses breakaway links on some boltsnaps, George ties everything on except rebreather bailouts.

I once posted a thread and poll to see how others felt about this but it didn't work out.

Everything else you said is completely accurate of course.

For once, let's try to keep this on topic and not water down with DIR.

What has GI3 done to you personally for you to think he is an "a**hole"?

I don't feel like I'm one of those who turns everything to DIR vs Not-DIR but I'm wondering how we can discuss George and GUE without going into DIR.

I agree though, too many threads do get turned that way which start out having little or nothing to do with it.

I hear he is an A hole, but i suspect because GI has such strong opinions he rubs people the wrong way.

I have never talked to him and dont have an opinion of him, nor should anyone who hasnt met or talked to him in person.

he is doing something right, like him or not.

I've seen GI3's mailing list posts, and from what I hear about him, he's one of those folks who's internet personality and RL personality are almost unrecognizable....

Steve Belinda is another one of those... In person, he's a great guy... stick a keyboard in front of him and watch out!

They all love to sling mud on that list, GI holds his own though. He does get passonate ( some would even say pysco) about the way things are done.

I find some of those e mails rude but hey its just his opinion and heck some of those are hilarious to read.
