I'm considering the ZX/DS-V and the ZX 50D. I know the second stages are the same but can anyone help me out with the difference between the first stages. WHat makes the 50D a higher end reg?

the 50D swivels, and thats about it really. I opted for the DSV feeling that the 50D wasn't worth the extra cash.

The dive shop I used didn't seem to think the DSV was really that good. He has other lower end regs in stock that he recommends so I know it's not that he only wants to sell the higher end things.

The DS-V has a lower WOB, lower profile, better (for me) hose routing, and, best of all,
no damned swivel turret. There is nothing "better" about the 50-D.

Any specific reasons? "didn't seem to think the DSV was really that good" is not all that convincing.

It's been a few months so I really don't remember. I want to say it has something to do with the size of the chamber and low pressure performance of the first stage.

The DSV has a better flow path than that of the 50D, which must add two more 90 degree turns in order to accommodate the swivel design. Both regulators perform better than 99% of the population will ever need.

The 50D costs more because it has more parts and takes longer to build.

Ten years ago the 50D swivel design was very popular... not so much so today.

Ever seen the show "The Sea Hunters"? Mike Fletcher is the lead diver, decades of experience in deep commercial diving, and he uses a ZX DSV down to 250+ in that show on a regular basis.

I use a pair of 50D's on my Doubles rigs. The swivel definately helps with hose routing. I use a DS-V on my stage bottle. I live in upstate NY and dive Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes year round. Even in the coldest weather and water conditions, the Zeagles perform flawlessly.
