To me, every dive on a rebreather should be viewed as a solo dive, taking 100% responsibility for your needs and NOT planning on others for help. having a buddy is nice, but the sad fact remains that when mistakes and malfunctions are missed by complacency, there is often precious little a buddy can do to save you.
I'd say avoid diving solo, especially in the beginning, but always dive with a solo mindset...anyone can take a concept too far, but you get what I mean.
Dave Sutton has some interesting posts on RBW from years back on the Alpinist mindset, which I think have some merit.

Solo as in Solo? I'd have to say your off your rocker but I know people that do it. To me the risks far outweigh any gain. If your talking Solo as in the only rebreather in a group no problem, you'll just hate having to hurry through the dive and cut your dive short
