I just posted a long report in the Deep Dixie Divers subforum on SB about snorkeling in Destin FL, in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle. This may be especially of interest to you who live in the Southeastern U.S. While it is not Cozumel, there can be some surprisingly good snorkeling around the Destin Jetties. The density of fish, in particular, is probably greater than what you will find in most tropical locations. In addition, the water off Destin is usually the clearest of anywhere along the Florida Gulf coast.
Here's the report and some photos:

A few years ago, I also wrote some basic info about snorkeling in Destin on TripAdvisor (look for the reply by Hawkfish; that's me):

Also, I'd be interested in getting feedback from any other snorkelers who take photos. I am really getting into this, although my equipment is a simple point 'n shoot. There don't seem to be many quality underwater photos taken by snorkelers.

Oooooohh! A Great Report! When I am free to get out of town for a few days (which could be awhile, unfortunately), I'll head up that way. That sounds like a great alternative to making the Keys trip. Thank you very much!::D
