Please define or describe for me what survival swimming is. I haven't found that spelled out in my books. It is something that I must be able to do for 20 minutes.

Well, not sure it it's changed.. but basically it's more of a float than it is swimming. You put your face in the water, and let your arms and legs hang while you float at the surface taking a breath whenever necessary. It's supposed to conserve your energy and works pretty well.

I was wondering if that was it. I learned it many years ago but have always known it as survival floating. The swimming thing through me off.

Why face down float instead of a back float?

I've been able to maintain an unassisted back float / swim for litterally hours. I think I would quit a face down float after a few minutes (If I didnt have a mask and snorkle that is).

The skill I CANT seem to master is the treading of water for 10 minutes using no fins and keeping your arms straight up in the air. I'm lead to belive this is going to be a skill I will need to complete for DM certification.

To me....survival swimming is keeping yourself alive and a float on the surface with whatever method necessary, while trying to reach a destination with no time limits.

Survival swimming to me is keeping your self alive through whatever means necessary. If that means on your back, face down, sideways or backstroke. The point to survival swimming is just that, survival, not looking good with great form.

survival floating in the face down position was to rest. You totally relax and when you need a breath you use the minimum amount of effort that will raise your mouth out of the water enough to inhale. Floating on your back when waves are present doesn't allow you to relax enough.

The treading water with your hands up out of the water is technique wise fairly easy. The problem is the amount of effort needed to perform this. Very high energy output, but IMHO a very good indicator of aerobic fitness.

SpyderTek--I think that all you have to do is have your hands out of the water, not your entire arm. I may be wrong about that though.
