I don't own lights so I use the red filter that's on my housing almost always. I flip it up in real shallow water. I shoot in sunny blue Caribbean water no deeper than 60-80'.
I shoot with everything Auto also except I recently started backing AE down a couple of stops. To -2. Only because I read it here: http://www.hdvunderwater.com/EVO review.html - scroll down to the "Improving Image Quality" section. And I'm still playing around with the shutter lock. (actually not sure why you do that)
My last trip I also tried using an Expodisc white balance filter in front of the port and powering up the camera for better white balance. I believe I could see the difference but it made everything more monotone. So that didn't go so well...in fact I just sold the Expodisc...
So I'm still playing around with various options. Most dives I just shoot everything in full auto. The only reason I tried the AE compensation is that once or twice on shallow dives, I've seen sort of a halo effect off bright objects like tank valves or shiny tanks.
