Ok guys I am looking for a cheap DECO reg. Any Idea's? I am thinking about the OMS regs or just a cheap MARES AXIS PRO REGULATOR or somthing else affordable.Just for you people that are worried that i am a stupid inexperienced diver, I am taking my tech classes this summer.

I haven't heard anything good about OMS regs but I have never personally breathed off one.

I don't think the Mares is what you want either as it doesn't have a 1st stage swivel. While you typically don't want swivels on your backgas, they are very nice on deco bottles and stages as it allows the hose to comfortably go down the side of the tank when stowed then over your shoulder when deployed.

I use Salvo regs on my deco/stage bottles. I feel Dive-Rites are also a good option. There are a lot more great deco regs out there depending on how much you want to spend.

Well I don't have any personal experience with it, but I've had a few people tell me they weren't overly impressed with the OMS workhorse reg, even for shallow water deco. I'm taking my deco course this summer as well, and started gathering up gear last year for it. What I did was hunt around online, and I found several places were blowing out the Oceanic OmegaII because it was being discontinued, so I snapped up two of them, and now have nice environmentally sealed, balanced diaphragm regs for deco, so maybe you should keep searching around and see if you can find something a little better than the OMS on special somewhere.

Why a cheap reg? Your ratio of time breathing from your bottom gas compared to your deco gas is, at least, on the order of 1:1 and the more advanced dives would only be higher (1:2 or 1:3). Why not get the same quality reg that you use for your back gas?

Also, could you define cheap.

I have the OMS workhorse reg and I'm not crazy about it. Taking a breath out of the reg is like trying to pull a Mack Truck! I use it for my O2 bottle and even at 20' it's a bit laborous to breath with it which raises the discomfort level abit for me. I do have two other regs I use for my 120', 70' deco bottles which are all TDL (Technical Diving Limited I think) deco regs. The actual company that makes them is "Promate". They're cheap easy to maintain and breath well. These are the best deco regs for me, they're simple easy to maintain, easy to breath from and bullet proof. I have friends that used Apex regs which is the best stage regs to use in my opinion, but the price is alittle high for me.

Edit: it is Technical Diving Limited.

I have the OMS reg for deco and it works fine. I use it on my oxygen bottle so I am never deeper than 20 feet. I actually like the first stage and plan on keeping it. I am somewhat less impressed with the second stage and will probably replace it with somthing else. The second stage usually plays a larger role in the perception of comfort and gas delivery and I would like a second stage that is more compact and has adjustments that will allow me to fine tune the reg in the water if I want to. Having just said that you should be aware that I have been saying this for two years and have not yet replaced the second stage. If it really sucked I would have replaced it long ago instead of just talking about it. :)

I don't understand the logic behind wanting a cheap reg on your deco bottle ... seems that when you have a deco obligation, the last thing you need is a reg problem.

I use Apeks DST first stages on my deco bottles. Got an ATX50 second on the O2 bottle and an S550 second on the EAN50 bottle. They work out just fine for me.
