I'm wondering if any of you guys know some rough figures of what causes most scuba deaths? I'm looking for percentages.

Is there a comprehensive website somewhere?

Check the DAN Dive accident and injury reports that are released each year. You have to be a member to download them as PDFs, they can also be purchased from DAN as paper copies. They are the most detailed you can get if you don't want to compile all the data yourself.

Running out of air.

Then you have overall stupidity. Love the Darwin candidates.
Poor or no planning.
Faulty gear (mainly due to improper care or repair)
Pre-existing medical conditions (obesity, heart problems, etc)
DAN probably has percentages, but they will definatley make you pay for them. As there is no required accident reporting to DAN you may only get partial or incomplete results.

You might try rephrasing "death from scuba" to something like "death during scuba". The subtle difference is important to note, as some deaths during scuba might be independent of the activity (for example cardiovascular death).

Buddy separation although not a cause does seem to be a common element in many scuba fatalaties.

i would say ALL scuba deaths are caused by failure of the victim's heart to continue
pumping

Most often a coroners report will list cause of death as drowning.

What lead up to the drowning and what actions could be taken to avoid drowning are more often found in the DAN reports.

Of note is the fact that upwards of 70 percent of all divers who drown, still have all their weights on when found on the bottom.
