DC1200 wide angle lens question

You don't want to have any air in between the housing lense and the wide angle lense. Try to take some pictures on land with the wide angle lense attached. Your pictures will be out of focus. Attaching the lense to the housing will assure that there is no air in this space.
 
The water adds to the refraction of the lens and is integral to its operation.
 
Additionally, the wide angle lens, if placed on above water, will eventually leak water into the space between it and the housing; you'll have to remove and reattach it anyway to remove the air pocket.
