I have recently received the DC1000 Maxx kit and my wife and I are both new to underwater photography. I have done a lot of research, just enough to know I know next to nothing. I have reviewed the manuals I received with the camera kit and both the camera housing, and strobe light housings, indicate that the o-rings should NOT be lubricated. Being a noob, this seems to go against much of the research I have done as well as general knowledge regarding o-ring care and maintenance.

I am hoping that somebody with more experience than me can explain the reason for not applying silicone grease to the o-rings in the sealife kit. This set-up is our experiement into photograhpy and will be going to Grand Cayman in a week for its maiden voyage. Thanks in advance for any information on this topic.

I think the only time you would lubricate an o-ring is when it rests between 2 revolving parts. As in your 1st stage when you screw in the plug or hose. This being only squeezed negates the need for lubrication which can only serve to allow things to stick to the o-ring and or deteriorate it.
But, take this with a grain of salt, sealife Joe will give you the real scoop.

We are using silicone O-rings and they are in axial set-up so we are able to eliminate the need to lube them. Also adding lube to an o-ring makes it more prone to getting dust, hair and particles on it causing them to break the seal.

Joe,

Thanks reply, and a thanks to you also Skipper John. The wife is really excited about testing this camera out. I'll post back to let yall know how it goes next week diving.
