Second day completed! All theory has now been done and no one had any real issues. The PADI way is to get folks to do the theory and reviews at home...some hadn't done this so they caught up in class but I thought that they would miss out from not really reading the text.

Anyway, the confined water dives 3 and 4 seemed to go okay - 2 hours in the pool did go in quick. THe fin pivots were okay and after a bit of fiddling around the hover was okay - I suspect this was more difficult because of the shallowness (swimming pool) and extra weight to make sure us noobs stayed on the bottom....

The buddy alternate share was okay but I got a little confused going from doing this with the instructor to doing this with buddy. The reason is that the instructor hashis alternate over is left side so the reg is the 'right' way around when in use by a buddy, of course with my fellow class mate the alternate was over the right meaning it needs tobe turned back on itself to get the reg. the right way around and usable...of course I forgot and stuck the reg in upside down - d'oh. Still, managed to get it sorted - for a moment I thought I was going to bin it but managed to get it sorted.

I'm surprised PADI no longer teach the buddy share. Well okay, so there's some reasons like one buddy might not want to let it go or at some point neither buddy has air...but hmmm.....its not ideal but if that's the only option left then wouldn't it be better to know how and what its all about...??

Tomorrow we complete the doff/don under the water and the 10 min float and we're also going to do our first OW dive :D (Yipee!) On Thursday we are going to do the pther 3 OW dives - bit of a shame as the club is havng a dive in the evening which I thought would be fun to do (y'now first 'real' dive) but not sure if thats a good idea....?

Jon...this is an interesting fact, especially since PADI does make mention of the buddy share on their final exam. My instructor (fortunately) is a big advocate of knowing the buddy share regardless of PADI's policies and taught it to us anyway...I believe it's better to know ALL options....so did she. ;)

Good luck on your OW check-outs!!! You'll have a great time!!! :)

Jon,
The position of the alternate air source is one reason why you need to do your BWRAF. A lot of BSAC folks have the AAS on the left - you'll also come across people who donate the regulator they are breathing when sharing air (the backup is around the divers neck which is then popped upinto the mouth and the longer hose which the diver was breathing is then donated.).
