I would like to explain a few things first. One is that the news I present and the opinions I present are based on the limited ability of me and my staff to gain information. It is guaranteed to be neither perfect nor jounalistically accurate. Nextly we had our staff survey the island today, both by land where we coud get to by land, then by one of our boats to the south part of the island. They are just getting back and my partner Memo Mendoza will be calling me within 10 minutes with a full report whcih I will relay to you.
Before Memo calls me I would like to express one very important factor. Their are lots of hotels and dive shops ready to provide a great experience, all they need is electical power. So that is the key for deciding on when to come to Cozumel.
It might be best to keep specific questions for a few minutes until I get the call from Memo. But there is power at some locations and the Corpus Christi neighborhood/Chedraui is due on Friday. I am on the phone with Memo now.
Memo did it from South to North From South to North:
Iberostar: in very bad shape, most all roofs gone, Pier can be identified but just a few sticks coming out of the water.
Occidental Grand: Seems to be in good shape with an intact pier and tourists sunning themselves on the beach!
Allegro Resort. Pier is seriously damaged but we could not discern any structural problems at the buildings.
The Occidental grand is a new add-on to the Allegro Resort which was formerly known as the Diamond Resort.
Nachi Cocom day beach is hurt but the Pier is OK, as is the Playa Mia (formerly Playa Sol). Both of those can be back in operation very fast.
San Francisco and Paradise Beach resorts are hurt bad, neither had piers.
Club had lots of windows broken, pier and everything else near the beach is gone.
Private Houses north of Reef Club appear to be ok structurally but lots of broken windows. All palapas and exterior walls are down.
Fiesta Americana Looks to be in good shape but everything on the water side of the road is gone.
Presidente has lost all beach and structures close to the beach are gone, like the restaurant/bar.
El Cid/La Ceiba lots of broken windows and rocks in lobby. They refused to let us enter saying they were waiting for insurance adjusters. The beach part of their property is surely gone.
Casa Del Mar hotel seems to be in pretty good shape but like most other waterfront structures their beach stuff, pier and everything else is gone.
Villa Blanca Hotel: Hotel seems ok with just broken windows, beach facilities are trashed.
Caribe Blu: Lower floor is trashed and doors and windows are blown out of almost every room. Adjacent buildings are trashed as well. Upper floor may be ok.
Hotel Cozumel may be ok, but we were denied entrance. Beach stuff gone
Scuba Club: They won't let us in during good times. We presume that all of the facility close to the beach is trashed, but the view from the street is OK
Casa Mexican says they are closed for a month but that may be because they are housing all of the Mexican disaster officials. they are in good shape
Bahis Hotel: In good shape and ready to accept guests as soon as power is on.
Coral Princess: Refuse to let us in. Lots of broken windows but it sits high enough to probably avoid much damage to the lobby or rooms
Cozumeleno: Lots of broken glass, beach probably gone. Should be closed for 3 months
Melia Mayan: same as Cozumeleno, closed for 3 months.
That is it for todays report. I will answer questions and if I don't have an answer I will try to get it figured out for tomorrow. Next I want to talk about the dive we did today.
Thanks again to Dave for all the great info
