Hello!

Does anyone know if there is a database of marine life that is available (ideally in a non-profit fashion)? I am looking to incorporate such data into a (free) mobile phone app and web site.

Thanks
Markus

Great idea for an app! If you try a search on the board, you should find different links.

I know there are apps available for Hawaiian marine fauna. I know there are lots of regional fauna diversity web sites available, but I don't know of any comprehensive worldwide online guide.

Yes!

We're on the same page I have started a database and research on Red Sea most common encounters that divers will come across while diving. And I'm interested in doing something else. Lets converse! We can set up some incredible dive apps for scuba diving.

Visit my website Dive Sites And Weather

Under the heading Dive Sites and Weather There is the list of dive sites and each site has the encountered species I've come across. I have a database of population per dive site as well.

Regards! have fun diving and enjoy.

Look at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
at FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture - PUBL_StateofWorldFisheriesandAquaculture and search for "Marine Resources" or "Identification". You will find a wealth of detailed species information. I found this from a post here on Scubaboard a couple of years ago: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/marine-life-ecosystems/294759-free-marine-species-id-books.html.

Looking at one of these documents, page 2 says:

So you may be in luck if you're doing something not-for-profit, but sort out your legalities for yourself, I'm no legal expert.
