Okay, I know this may seem trivial to some...but.....

I've been diving for a little over 2 years....and I LOVE it. My dive buddy is my dad.....we've had some awsome times together and fun stories to share.

Is there any one else out there that's ever dived with their dad? Or am I the only one.......just thought I'd ask.

If so...any one have any fun stories to relate? Or any that wouldn't be to embarrasing to share?

Hi Scubagirl,

My two younger sisters, myself and my father are all certified. 17 years ago. We were 12, 18 and 21.

The best advice I can give you is to make sure you don't depend on your Dad. You need to be self proficient. Your dad may want tend to try to help / protect you. It's only natural. Make sure you are putting your own gear together, helping plan the dive, lead part of the time and are an equally proficient buddy.

I actually got certified two years after the rest of my family as I was away at college. My dad used to put my gear together while I was in the locker room changing into my swimming suit. I repeatedly asked him not to. & boy did we argue!

During a pool exercise I couldn't disconnect a hose. 'cause I had never put it together and didn't understand the disconnect. ARGHHH! Anyway, that was the last night he was in the pool area while I was taking the course. He didn't understand that his 'help' was anything but helpful until that point.

Do have fun - family vacations take on a whole different light when there are multiple divers.

Glad that you are diving with your father. Diving is a great activity and should be shared. To me, there is such a peaceful calm under the water.

My son just certified and if he did not have to work tomorrow, I had planned on going diving with him. As to what Diver Paula indicated, my plan is to be the dive buddy. I want to allow him to plan and execute the dive. We would be in a quarry with a max depth of 42', so nothing extreme. If I always do and control, I feel he will not learn, build confidence, and be a better dive buddy for others. But I will be there to correct and to monitor.

Dive safe!

Dan

My daughter and I dive all the time together. She's been certified over a year now and has become a very good diver. I completely agree with Paula about the amount of "help" that a parent gives their kids. We have to guide them, not do it for them.
Hopefully my daughter and I will be diving together for many years to come. :07:

I am sooo trying to get my eldest daughter to certify! She did one dive with her new husband on her honeymoon (a discover scuba thing) - they were supposed to do OW after but he had problems with an ear infection - so I still have to wait a bit!

i wish anyone in my family would dive!! They support me but it would be nice to be able to talk to a family member about diving. You are very lucky to have your dad diving with you!

I think its great that you dive with your dad. My 2 sons dive with me often and we have a great time. They are 16 and 19 and for fathers day they took me diving. They are good divers and I don't have to worry because I know they are trained well and dive safe. Thats what is important.

I have a daughter who is nearly three years old, and I am counting the days until I can certify her and take her diving (2705 approx).

I hope she enjoys it as much as you seem to do scubagirl

That's awesome. We just has our first child...a baby girl. She's only 12 weeks old but I am already looking forward to a time of diving with her (assuming she likes it). Actually we already did one dive together....a check out dive on a house reef in the Maldives. She was a just an embryo then, maybe 5 weeks. ;)

I think it's wonderful that you dive with your dad, I'd give anything for that chance. The memories your making together now will be the same memories that get you through the tougher times in life. What wonderful memories to fall back on... (regaurdless of how much he might or still may embarress you)
