I'm curious. I'd like to hear how often people have been on a dive boat in Coz and the DM wanted to take the group on a dive that would intentionally put them into deco requiring deco stops, etc.?

I've not heard of it happening that way. I did do a deco there 2 years ago with a tech instructor I trust. I wanted to experience it so I could give first hand reasons why you don't need to go that deep when student ask. This was my idea not his and he did it as a favor to me. I dive with his outfit everytime I go to Cozumel.

ON TOPIC: I did some dives that far exceeded recreational tables, and required long off-gassing stops on the way up. Planned decompresssion dives are 'technical' dives, and there are some tech outfits on the island who are clearly doing this kind of stuff

OFF TOPIC:
The 4th dive of the day with 2 newly qualified o/w students, DM and myself. My conservative Suunto gave me a 15 minute stop at a 3m ceiling, which I duly obeyed.

The DM who had dived the same profiles as me all day went up to the boat with the students and came back for me. "Come up. Don't worry about it" he gestured.

Next day the DM didn't show up for work. "He has a headache" the staff said.

"He should be in the chamber," I told them.

Next day he was.

There are a couple of dives here that it is common for people to go into "deco" on their computer, but it's often not TRUE deco. For example. Maracaibo is best between 150 and 170. The top of the wall begins at 90 feet. This dive is too deep for nitrox, so invariably, people typically have deco obligations. However, those deco obligations typically go away as you rise to a shallower depth and stay there for awhile. This could be considered a deco stop, but it's in our dive plan as a multi-level dive. The computer typically clears before you reach the stop on your computer or stay for the time your computer initially tells you. We also do an extended safety stop on dive like this. I don't feel like I am explaining this very well...so I hope it makes sense :)

Punta Sur is another one that soemetimes puts people into deco for a short period of time.

Once in 11 years, last year on Maracaibo.

Twice...both times at Punta Sur....although the second was cleared by the time we leveled off at ~ 50 fsw.....it was nice having lp120s with lotsa air. Both on Suuntos.

I got very close on 1 or 2 dives, but we did a 5 minutes safety stop and even before we began our stop, my puter was NO DECO with multiple minutes to spare. I was using a Suunto Stinger and my Scubapro UWATEC Smartcom. All great dives.

Last fall Diego invited me to do some deco-wall diving on Trimix, the next time I come down. Who would he go out with? Funny enough, Trimix doesn't cost any more in Coz as it does around here in my parts!

without checking log, I would guess of my approx. 80 dives in Coz, 6 or 7 have had deco obligations from 4 to 11 minutes in addition to a safety stop. As Christi outlined in her post, those dives are Punta Sur, Maracaibo, and I know of one very long dive on Columbia Deep. I will go further explain that these situations are not new to me as I am certified for such dive exposures.
