Traveling with my wife in early April to Curacao and we'd welcome some advice on where to stay. We are both divers and, while we like the occasional afternoon off, diving is our main priority. No kids, so a child-friendly place is not an issue for us. We don't want to be isolated, but we do value peace & quiet. There are few worse ways to end a nice dive day than by being kept awake by the thump-thump-thump of the disco or by the blaring television of your neighbor on the other side of paper-thin hotel walls. So, we're not sure the beach hotel/resort/casino thing would work for us.

From reading the threads, a lot of the best dive sites are out west, but not too many people seem to stay there. Is Westpunt very isolated? Could we spend a week or more out there and have a variety of post-dive distractions and dining options? What are some of the less hectic hotel/apartment operations in Willemstad? How about in between? Any good lodging options between the big city and Westpunt? As long as a place is clean and quiet, we're not too picky, but wouldn't mind pampering ourselves a bit during this trip. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know which hotels are currently the best to stay, however I know the island fairly well as I lived there half my life (and I'm 61 now). Last time I visited was in 2009. While the distances are not great compared to what Americans are used to, the roads on C. are in bad repair and street lights are an illusion. The road to Westpunt, pragmatically called the weg naar Westpunt is 40 km from Willemstad and at night not a road I care to drive. So when you stay in that area, you are stuck there during the dark hours. So I would stay closer to town and drive to the dive sites when the sun is shining :)

After staying at the Marriot, (great but $$$$) a couple of times, we found a different spot near there. We rented a 2 bedroom bungalow in Piscaedera Bay. About 1/2 way from either end. Averaged about $1,200 for the week for everything. There is a charge per day of about$105, then they charge for cleaning at the end of the week and utilities. No maid service, but tons of room, and a huge patio area to dry gear. Gated community with regular patrols. I loved it, we could cook if we wanted to...Website is:

This is how I found them to begin with

I stayed at Kura Halanda and had a great time. It is quiet and beautiful. It is far from the city but there are some great dive sites along the way.

Hi Pacific Diver!

I know a dive operator who is offering "stay and dive" packages with villas and dive packages that is about half way in between Willemstad and Westpunt. That area is not too far from things to do and has the best dives on the island as well. The villas are in gated communities. I know that area and it's a great place to chill and right in the middle of the best diving!

I think info is on the website: Curacao - Shore Diving - Dive Courses - Dive Safaris - Dive Excursions - Cruiseship Diving - - they are also on TripAdvisor so you can get an idea if you're interested form that, too.

Enjoy your trip to the Island!
