Just emailed ours in today. We sent the rebate form and the American Airlines page that showed our air/hotel reservations. It doesn't mention passports at all on the rebate form. The closest it gets is "all relevant documents to show proof of booking/payment for travel" but I didn't take that to include passports so I hope we didn't need to send those as well.
 
Previously, the instructions for the Airfare Rebate said to send a copy of passport, but they have deleted that requirement form the form. I guess it is not necessary anymore and I thought it was a bit over the top at the time, since they do require hotel and airline confirmations. If you book your airfare in a fake name I bet you would have some problems at the airport.
