Anyone done much diving there? Me and my friend were trying to decide if we thought the diving there would be good or not. Any info would be appreciated.

I accidentally typed this in the bay islands section. Can someone put it where it belongs. Thanks a lot.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

moved to Greater Antilles...

I posted in here asking something similar as well but have had no response....I will now also watch your thread too to see if anybody answers...my post is linked HERE

If you are thinking of going after the end of June, I can let you know what I thought (I'll give you my email address to ask me about it)....if you want.

There is excellent diving in Cuba. Of course it is 700 miles long, so there are many areas and they vary in quality of diving. Best seem to be 1) Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), big walls, tunnels, a la Cozumel, good fishlife. 2) Maria la Gorda (4 hr ride from Havana to the West) excellent diving. Both are written up semi-adequately in Lonely Planet Guide to Diving Cuba. Not expensive, can be booked when in Cuba, and wonderful trips.

Diving Cuba ?

I did Varadero ( 1 ) ... Will probably never go back !!! :shakehead:

Cayo Coco ( 3 ) ... Nice dive site, 20/35 meter viz DM's are excellent and lots of fun.

Cayo Largo ( 3 ) ... Very good dive site, 35/50 meter viz, DM's are awesome. :D

Next in sight ... July 4th going to Santa-Lucia. Heard and read about fantastic wreck dive, 19th century gallion almost entirely preserved !!!

Have a peek at my galery !!!

Great! Finally a diver with lots of experience diving in various locations in Cuba! So hard to find.

We're considering Cuba too (or maybe Curacao, but Cuba would be so much cheaper, easier to organize and get to, and we really do love the AI package convenience, so decision not made) I've only been to Varadero (as a non-diver then), and from the snorkeling alone, I totally agree... not the place for divers at all.

So, it sounds like you'd recommend Cayo Largo over Cayo Coco? How close are the sites to shore at each? Have you ever heard anything about the diving in Cayo Santa Maria?

What about for non-divers? Looks like both have similar nice beaches?

Hi Deb.

;) Cayo Largo any day !!!

Dive site are about the same distance at either place ... 15 to 30 minutes boat ride. But Cayo Coco's site are in general closer ... maybe 1 or 2 30 minutes boat ride in a week compare to Largo, 5 or 6 and even 1 double tank outing 2 1/2 hour from the marina !!!

Never been and don't know anybody who dove Santa-Maria ..

Depending on what non-divers want to do, Cayo Coco is the place. The only way in or out of Cayo Largo is by plane and there is nothing to do on the island !!! But if you're looking to do beach ... Cayo Largo has an AWESOME beach .... yes you did read correctly : 1 beach ... depending on mother nature, the beach is 20 km long !!! If you like walking on the beach, that's the place !!!

Have a nice trip !!!

I went there in 2002 and 2003 for a total of 5 trips with an OFAC license. We basically performed REEF surveys, hence the research license. I recently re-obtained my license and plan on returning as often as I can get volunteers to help with the fish counting. On to your question: I dove Mara la Gorda about 100 times and I will never get tired of it. The Isle of Youth is also good and I hear Queens Gardens is spectacular! I will visit there hopefully on my next trip in November. Call or email me if you would like to talk more about Cuba. captrib@charter.net 636.671.9231
