Action Alert: Crisis in the Galapagos Islands - Again!

I just receive this alert from the Shark Research Institute.

Please read the following action alert regarding the crisis in the Galapagos Islands. We also ask that you email this information to everyone in your email address book. Ask them to send protests to the persons listed below , and then forward it to all in their address books, etc.

Galapagos National Park Director Edwin Nuala Removed

The president of Ecuador, Lucio Gutiérrez, has removed Galapagos National Park Director Edwin Nuala, a professional biologist and dedicated defender of the park, and replaced him with Fausto Cepeda, who is pro-fishing, pro-development and anti- conservation. Cepeda is now the ninth GNP director since Gutiérrez took office in January 2003!

This move brings to an end the efforts of the National Park to protect the Galapagos National Park Marine Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from illegal fishing activities. In short, the marine life of the Galapagos will be devastated if this appointment stands.

The president of Ecuador is bowing to political pressure from fishermen, many of whom have recently moved to the Galapagos after the crash of the fishing industry on the mainland. The tourist industry actually brings far more money into the Galapagos economy than fishing.

The time has come for the tourist industry to flex its muscles; It needs to use its power by calling for a boycott of the Galapagos Islands until Ecuador protects these islands put an end to corruption, illegal exploitation and mob violence by fisherman.

National Park Rangers are now on strike in support of Nuala. All of us who care deeply about these profoundly unique islands support the rangers. The Galapagos National Park has seen crisis after crisis, each more violent and threatening than the last.

This present crisis is the most serious to date and marks the first time that the President of Ecuador has directly intervened to shut down conservation in the National Park.

The Shark Research Institute has two open expeditions scheduled to the Galapagos in 2005, and we plan to cancel them if Cepeda's appointment stands.

This new guy can't be a total weenie. What are his qualifications for the position, is he a biologist too? He might be better suited as an environmental manager or facilitator, able to bring all sides to the table and hammer out things.

If the park director job's been changed nine times since 2003, this new dude is on shaky ground just like his predecessors. What I don't get is, why were the first seven directors replaced?

The new appointee, Mr. Cepeda, is also a biologist and is a former director from the early 1990's or so. The issue is very political and quite heated.

Funny how the "Shark Research Institute" left this out of their "Action Alert". In my mind it takes away from their credibility as a scientific institution, if that's what they are. Poo on them. Thanks for taking the time to dig into that, adshepard.

Now I wonder why the park rangers are really on strike. Could just be they want a vacation.

On the other hand, if Mr. Cepeda condones illegal fishing activity, he does suck and should be ousted. However him condoning illegal fishing doesn't make any sense... he's a government official.

The Galapagos... such a mess. Ecuador would be better off ceding it to the U.N. in my opinion. Less fuss.

Folks,

I know Dr. Alex Antoniou personally. I have been diving with him in the Galpagos. He is an extremely intelligent and caring man of the highest personal honour.

He and the Shark Research Institute have done more to protect Whale Sharks in particular, and all species of shark in general, than any other orgaization.

He and his organization are worthy of your trust, and need your help!

Sep 29, 2004 Last night, the Minister of Environment, Fabián Valdivieso, removed Faustus Cepeda as Director of the Galapagos National Park and appointed Victor Carrion as Interim Director.

Shark Research Institute strongly protested when Ecuadorean President Lucio Gutiérrez replaced highly- respected biologist Edwin Naula as Park Director with Cepeda, as did Park rangers, environmentalists and the tourist industry. Cepeda sided with local fishermen who want to increase their sales to Asian markets by fishing within the Galapagos Marine Reserve. The government of Ecuador strongly criticized Cepeda for provoking violence at the Park, and 300 Park rangers went on strike for more than two weeks in protest at Cepeda's appointment.

The Minister of the Environment said Mr. Carrion, a Park biologist, will take over as Interim Director. A new director will be selected after consulting with conservation organizations, and the Minister will be sending an official notice to international organizations that work in the Galapagos in order to restore their support.

The government will also initiate a process to define the qualifications required of the Park Director. The terms of contract of the Director will be defined so that the stability of the position is guaranteed, and those involved in conservation of the islands will be asked to submit lists of candidates. Édgar Muñoz, a spokesman for the Park, said that as of today the Park is open again.

Wow. Wow again. I didn't think federal governments moved this quickly anymore. Can't figure out how Cepeda could have provoked violence if he was pro-fishing, unless the environmentalists took up arms. That's rather arsey-versey. Geez, 300 park rangers! That's like a small battalion. I can barely conceive of such a number all in one area. How refreshing.

Since the international environmental NGO's have such a massive interest in the Galapagos, I think it's good planning to use their input in the new director's selection process. But so long as fishing interests are strong in the archipelago, that stakeholder group will require proper consideration as well. Interesting conflict pattern, which the government should have resolved long ago. I just hope the fishermen and developers don't storm the Darwin Station again and slaughter the tortoises. That blew.

Ha ha, let's time how long it takes for the next "crisis" to take place. I'll give it 4 months. Any other takers?
