OK,
Now here's a shocker. In the 2004 Funjet book they've got Plaza Las Glorias at a 4. Along with the Reef Cub & Playa Azul Golf & Beach Resort.

Now that I am looking more closely at the 2 books, it looks like FJ has eliminated the 6 rating this year & 5 is the best. Everything in the 2005 book has dropped a rating. But that still puts Plaza Las Glorias at a 3, which was much to high.

I know what I want to be when I grow up:
I want to be the secret shopper who travels around & checks out all the hotels. What a dream job. They pick-up the tab & you get paid.

I want to go to work for the ad agancy that does all the Corona beer commercials. I would even hold my nose and drink the stuff. ;^)

You can't beat the location of the Plaza Las GLorias/ Cozumel Palace. I agree that it's hard to rate a hotel before it opens. Are the prices yet listed to stay there for a week? I wanted to stay there last August and cancelled last minute due to air conditioning complaints and problems. If that place finishes up nice once it's refurbished with a fair price, it will be hard to beat, whether it has a real beach or fake beach. The sun is the same, it's waterfront, you can swim in a pool and swim in the ocean, you're 5 or 10 minutes from the best restaurants in Cozumel, and you're there to dive. The dive operators will pick you up right there too! I don't care how they rate it, I can't wait to see how it comes out. Maybe the food will be good there too. I only wish that it wasn't all inclusive. However, a quick breakfast before you dive and a quick lunch after without the taxi rides into town would be nice.

Matt,

The prices are going to be HIGH. $1800ish/pp for the week = $257 per night/pp. I'll be interested to see if they can sustain these prices and keep the occupancy up. Regardless of how nice it is, those are mightly steep prices :)

Thanks to everyone for your help!!! I like Matt's reasoning, but my wife may trump me for the large beaches in the south...

If that's what we do, based on Christi's recommendations I would choose Allegro based on price unless people feel the extra $50pp per night is worth the upgrade to the Grand.

Hi,

Well, after much consideration we are going to stay at the Occidental Grand instead of the Palace. I'm just afraid it won't be done and running smoothly when we go (april 30 - May 7).

However, for those of you who were wondering about prices...

Cozumel Palace: 7 nights all inclusive at the end of April: 955.00 per person

Occidental Grand: 7 nights all inclusive: 833.00 per person

There might be better prices to be found...

Hope this helps!

May I ask where you got the $955 price, because that's not bad considering its location. I'd never have paid $1800, but for all inclusive, 955 dollars is definitely worth a look. The cab rides or car rental from the south end of the island would make up that $120 bucks after a few nights of coming to town. I don't doubt that the Grand would be a good fit for you however. I like being close to town.

So I guess it's $1800 per couple for the week...not as bad.

They have gone down considerably since the initial prices were published. That's good news...guess they decided they were going to price themselves out of the market.

Christi,

Do you feel the extra 100 per night is worth the grand over the allergro?

Thanks,

.............is the best on the island. Everything else can be great or poor depending on when you are there. I would take the Allegro over the Grand assuming you end up in one of the better rooms.

If you started out at the Allegro and decided it didn't meet your expectations you may be able to upgrade to the Grand, at a cost of course. Probally not the other way though as the Allegro can book up.

Good Luck!

Dave

BTW, Dive Palanacar onsite with both the Grand & Allegro are good, safe dive operators. It is amazingly conveinant walk 2 minutes from your room and be on your dive boat. Sorry Christi, I know this is your hunting grounds.
