I'm a Fish!
God day all,

Been reading a while but now I have questions. I am looking at booking a trip in Feb and can't decide on if I want to stay in Cozumel or RM. I am a diver but my GF will be doing her open water during this time. I just wanted some advice on which of the two would be best for diving? I don't care about the shopping etc, just diving. I will prob dive 4-5 days during my stay and she will do her open water. I am booking either or, just want to know the best experience. I have been to Cancun, Cabo and did some Diving in Asia.... thanks all

Cheers

No comparison. If it's diving you're looking for, Cozumel. If you have more questions, head over to the Cozumel thread....

Cheers, all i needed to know... heading over now!!

Cozumel hands down. The reef is some much healthier. What the mainland does have that Cozumel doesn't is cenotes and some wrecks. But neither compares to the huge reef formations and walls of Coz.

Or you could do what I am going to do in Feb..1 week in each!!:D

I wish lol... would like to stay on both!! I am tossed up right now. I could always do dive trips to Coz from Maya

But the time and money spent on the ferry/taxi's is a real bitch.

Stay on Cozumel and dive Cozumel. The ferry is a one hour ride each way and costs about $13.00 US each way. The reef is healthier on Cozumel than close to the mainland. If you want to dive the cenotes too, stay on the mainland.

Since your GF will be getting certified, that limits the amount of time she would have to dive with you after she passes her classes. You should be able to get a few dives in together towards the end of the week.

Enjoy your vacation.

Why are you in a toss up? You said you want the best diving, that's Cozumel. Don't even think about staying on the main land and taking the ferry over to Cozumel 5 days to dive.

What is the criteria that has you in a toss up? There must be something you aren't telling us. What's the draw to the mainland that is so important to this equation?

Well I am going to jump in with my O2..
The best diving, Cozumel BUT I have been going to Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel for many years and the diving from Playa is really good if you know who to go with and don't forget the cenote's.
Staying on the mainland and taking the ferry isn't really that bad, its all how you look at it. My wife is not a diver, she likes to lay on the beach and Cozumel can't compare to Playa's resorts and beaches so taking the ferry to dive and returning to a happy wife is a no brainer! She is happy and I get to dive so all is right with the world. For the record we have stayed on Cozumel many times and it is easier for me but in the end I'm on vacation and when we stay on the mainland I look at the ferry ride as down time, I have my coffee on the way over and a cerveza on the way back, nothing wasted there :)
