I am considering a family vacation over the fourth of July. My son and I are avid divers, but my wife and two teenage daughters don't dive. They prefer the beach. What is the weather like then normally? Is this a good choice or does anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks.

by the 4th of july it's getting nice and hot down there (ave. 87 with the humidity kicking up), the sun worshipers may have to get in the water and cool off more often. we've been there in late june and it's heating up pretty good.
the rainy season has started by then, but i wouldn't let that discourage you. like most islands the rainy season is pretty hit and miss, it usually doesn't rain every day and if it does it's just for a short while. according to the weather channel the average rainfall in july is 5.7in, compared to june at 14.9in and we have never been rained out of diving in june.
my experience has been that the rains come in the late afternoon and evening into night hours with mornings and early afternoon sun.
the diving should be great as always, the currents are probably pretty mild in july and the water should be heating up pretty good by then.
contact some of the dive ops and see what their schedule load is like that time of year, here's a couple of good ones, christi at www.bluextseadiving.com & martin at www.divewithmartin.com
hope this helps

I noticed you're from Nebraska, sallas76! Nice to see fellow divers from Nebraska post. Where do you live? We're in Omaha. I think you'll love Cozumel, the diving is great. We haven't been there in July though, only February and the end of May. I wrote a trip report with pictures on the Fiesta Americana, and diving with Dive House if you're interested.

Good luck with your trip planning!

Hey Scubagal! I enjoyed the trip report. Sounds fabulous!

I live on a ranch near Parks, Nebraska, it is in extreme southwest corner. Actually it is just a post office. We generally fly out of Denver, it is alot closer than Omaha.

We usually try to get away in January but this year late June or July should work better.

We were in Coz last year in the first week of July. This was right after the big storm that rolled through the area (several locations on the island showed the damage) so the viz was reportedly off, it was still great though. The temps ranged from the 87-94 degree range, and if I remember correctly it only rained twice (both times were welcome as it cooled things down a little). The currents ranged from mild to fairly strong depending on location.

Would dive there again and again and again. We're planning on going for a short trip there around May 15 depending on when my students last day of class is.

Have a great time, Jim

I lived in McCook for a couple of years, but that's been quite a while ago.

We were there over the fourth of July last year & everybody had a great time.
Two divers & two non-divers.

Go for it!

We have been to Coz twice in July and another time in Aug. Never seemed too hot or any other problems.
